Candlelight Memorial Service // THUR DEC 21 @8PM // Fort Pitt Boulevard at Grant Street // Operation
Safety Net is hosting its annual candlelight memorial service to remember the six
individuals who are known to have died while homeless in Allegheny
County in 2017. The
service is held at the corner of Fort Pitt Boulevard and Grant Street,
beneath a busy highway overpass, where a memorial wall of bronze plaques
commemorates the individuals who are known to have died while homeless
in Allegheny County since 1989. Donations
of new men’s and women’s hats, gloves, boots, and thermal underwear
will be collected for distribution to individuals at the Winter Shelter.
Care Closet Collection // THUR DEC 31 // main hall // We’re collecting
winter hats, gloves, socks, and underwear. Fill a bag and leave it under the
Christmas tree – or decorate the tree with your gifts! Contact Beth at e.p.jeffries@gmail.com
with questions.
Special Collection // at both Christmas worship gatherings // In addition to our regular offering, we will take a second offering for The Lazarus Fund - a ministry of Pittsburgh Presbytery that prevents homelessness. It gives
grants to folks in Allegheny County who are in danger of eviction or losing
utilities because of overdue bills. It's run by volunteers so there's no
overhead - every cent goes to someone who needs it. And our church is one
location where people can come to apply for the grant. You can give with cash, a check to HMBFC (write Lazarus Fund in the memo), or by texting any dollar amount and "lazarus" to 84321.
Christmas Eve Eve // SAT DEC 23 @ 7PM // main hall // Our most rambunctious Christmas gathering featuring Christmas carols, candle-lighting, and a special Christmas drama.
Christmas Lunch // SUN DEC 24 @ 12PM // main hall // Come early and celebrate with a FREE lunch that will be generously prepared and served by volunteers from the Jewish Federation for Mitzvah Day!
Christmas Eve // SUN DEC 24 @ 8PM // main hall // A more contemplative gathering with prayer, music and, of course, candle-lighting.There will not be a morning worship service.
Poverty Simulation // FRI JAN 5 9am-1pm // main hall // Just Harvest facilitates this experience to help participants begin to understand what it might be like
to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive month to
month. It will cover issues of unemployment, homelessness, disability,
and a myriad of other factors that can contribute to living paycheck to
paycheck. 2 ways to participate: 1) Just show
up at 9am to learn and be a participant! 2) Volunteer to be a staffer. We
are looking for people who have been in these situations and can speak
from real life experience about the struggle to get ahead given certain
life circumstances. Email maggie@hotmetalbridge.com or sign up here.
What the HEALTH!? // MON JAN 8 @ 7PM // main hall // Jesus said to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength. In this monthly workshop we are exploring ways to integrate physical wellness with mental and spiritual wellness. This month the focus will be on "Battling Cold, Flu & Congestion Naturally." In 2018 WTH will be meeting on the 2nd Monday of each month. Contact Bonni.Smiley@hotmail.com.
