By Wendy Young After homeschooling my 4 children for more than 20 years we are entering a new season in our home – mainly for me – but all in this family know change is coming.
We graduated our elder daughter via Cambridge in 2013, our elder son via GED®in 2015, our second daughter via GED® in 2017 and our youngest son is completing his Cambridge AS levels in June 2019. What a journey.
My children’s self directed learning and lives continue as they step into married life, college, the workplace and independent living….and mine?
After having homeschooled so long it is bitter sweet to face the end of a season and as a few of my friends have ended before me I have listened with interest in how they are filling their time and dealing with their changes.
I have had some of my own deliberations about this…
I am always a Mom Even with a married child and all 3 in college, my Mom status will never change. Embracing Momhood was always the goal – homeschooling just fitted under the umbrella of this role. I am still their sounding board, their greatest fan and their guide when they ask me for input. Homeschooling is neither my identity nor my main purpose in life. What is, is my personhood as defined by God and my relationship with Jesus Christ.
Memories always remain I have some of the sweetest memories tucked away in my heart and mind from the many years of homeschooling. Not just those sweet times of tea sets, poetry, painting and dress up, but also watching as my children took a step out on their own, and failed in some instances, but stood up taller and stronger because they had an inner strength to do it.
Every season has something wonderful in it The sleepless nights of a newborn, the intense training of a toddler, the excitement of learning new things of a preschooler, the tough lessons learnt in the teen years…all of them are wonderful when looking back. Granted, when you are in the sleepless night period, it’s quite hard to be joyful ;)
Exciting things are to come There is never nothing to do. Whether it is just a decluttering of the home, getting a new puppy or two, serving the community more, being more flexible with my time or being more available to ageing parents…
Taking joy in adult children All the hard work – and it was hard work – training, teaching, debating and equipping begins to be realized as our children metamorphose into adults. As we sit at the table in the evenings and they debate, as thinking people should, hot topics, worldviews and moral issues or when I watch them make grown up decisions all on their own or see their astounding work ethics, I can delight in their independence. So while I don’t know what life will look like for me on a day to day basis in less than a year, I do know that this has been 20+ years well spent and I delight in the people these children have become. |

| Home Education Documentary in the Making
Two South African homeschooling families are planning to shoot a documentary showcasing home education in SA.
They need support and funding to get this venture off the ground. While we have no way of knowing what their end product will look like, in the spirit of supporting one another, we have included the link to their crowd-funding page and encourage you to give a donation to assist with the costs of this venture.
