Subject: Beyond Resolutions: One Powerful Shift to Transform Your Health and Happiness

Dear Valued Patients And Community:

Let’s be honest. New Year's resolutions don’t work. By now, 43% of people have given up on their New Year’s resolutions for 2024. By mid-February, the number climbs to a staggering 80%. 9% of all those who set out with a New Year's Resolution will stick to it throughout the year. There's a lack of one key component to most resolutions that can make all the difference.

So, what consistently works across the board and according to research?

Developing a “why” statement with a deep, personal, and emotional connection.

Now hold on. I’m sure you’ve heard of this before. But let’s examine it on a deeper level because I know you want to achieve your goals this year.

Let’s start with a few examples. What a “why” statement is not: “ I want to get healthier.” “ I want to be more fit.”

While those may be a good starting place, what does “looking more fit” or “being healthier” look like to you? What would you be doing right now if you were “healthier” or “more fit”? Just for a moment, Humor me. Envision this with me.

Let me give you an example of one of my “Why” statements.

“I will do 100 minutes of Zone 2 cardio exercise & 60 minutes of weight training twice a week. In addition, I will complete all my physical therapy exercises, at least five days a week, so that I can find joy, gratitude, and abundance in the time with my family.”

Or put more simply: “I will do the above activities so that I can keep up with my son, and those who depend on me, whom I love very much.”
It could be as simple as, “I will walk for 20 minutes per day, 5 days a week so I can go on a romantic vacation with my spouse to (favorite destination) without having to constantly stop to rest every 100 feet.”

A “why” statement has to evoke emotion that is personal to you. It has to be so real and tangible that you can reach out and touch it. You need to be able to see it as if it were now in the present moment, even if your body is telling you otherwise!

You see… when it comes to health and wellness, we don’t think rationally. We are emotional beings who struggle with things that may not pay off for a while. You have to trick your brain.

This can change your viewpoint of “I need to do these exercises” to “I GET the privilege of using these tools from an expert to improve my movement SO THAT I CAN X, Y, Z.”

See the difference? You might think I’m splitting hairs, but that little change has made all the difference for me and the multitudes of successful patients we’ve treated.

Do whatever you need to do to make your “why” statement real. Post pictures of your dog, kid, vacation, etc. Whatever it is. Visualize it. See it in your mind. Then act out the steps to get you there. How would a healthy, active person act? Then do that!

When should you start? Well, ideally yesterday, but today is the second best time.

“But Chris, I’m so busy. I will do it when things settle down.”

Oh, man. If I had a nickel.

"When things settle down" is equivalent to never. You're probably never going to be less busy.

I’m not judging you. I’m just as guilty and don’t know what you’re going through, so that’s EXACTLY why a “why” statement is so critical.

It has to be real to you. If it’s not, you won’t prioritize it.

Make it real. Make it so undeniable that it's as if you are living it right now, EVEN IF you don't feel that way or your body is telling you something else.

I promise it is worth it, and your future self will thank you.
