Some while ago while listening to a podcast, I heard a slightly different variation of the popular bible verse "you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" (John 8:32) as "ye shall know the truth, the the truth shall make you free". It was the word "make" instead of "set" that tugged at my thoughts and set me off into contemplation. The truth shall set me free.... the truth shall make me free... why does it sound so similar but rings so differently in my mind and heart?

When thinking that the truth "sets" us free, it's digested as a passive, one time, extraordinary experience that happens to us in a magical moment of realization. Once the epiphany passes, we are left to believe that's all there is to it. We found the truth and now we are free - the end. That was easy! In contrast, when we think the truth "makes" us free, it puts us in the proactive frame of mind to continuously seek the truth that keeps us from drowning in the sea of lies that surrounds us. When the truth makes us free instead of setting us free, it implies we must always continue to seek the truth and to test those that come dressed as the truth. It puts the responsibility back on us to continue our pursuit of truth, especially when we believe we've found it.

With that, I want to leave everyone with a few questions to ponder upon: what is your relationship with the truth like today? Have you been set free once before? Are you free today? And will you know the truth tomorrow if it came in a pretty box mixed with a bunch of lies?
