Friends,
In case you missed it, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico has proclaimed the state's epidemic of gun violence a public health emergency. With the stroke of a pen, she issued a "emergency public health order" banning the open or concealed carry of weapons throughout Albuquerque and Bernalillo County for the next 30 days, regardless of a person's legal right to do so.
A public health crisis related to guns? Sounds pretty far-fetched... but I guess if it's for the greater good?! It worked for covid so why not give this a shot?
She reasoned that this unconstitutional and illegitimate command was preferable to blaming the lawbreakers themselves because "she can't arrest everyone!" Criminals don't care about the law, so the Governor just disarmed everyone who obeys it.
During the press conference, Governor Grisham explained she doesn’t think that constitutional rights are absolute, especially in emergencies.
There has never been a worse, more anti-liberty idea than emergency executive powers. These Governors are trying to bamboozle you into believing that they can just speak something into law.
Our Constitutional Republic is formed by three distinct, co-equal branches of government. We do not have authority concentrated in one person, as this wannabe dictator believes.
As you might expect, there was a lot of backlash and condemnation for her actions, and lawsuits were filed immediately. The Attorney General of New Mexico wrote to the Governor, declaring that his office will not defend her in the lawsuits against her unconstitutional gun prohibition because his "duty to uphold and defend the constitutional rights of every citizen takes precedence."
By the time I posted this video (above), a federal judge had already blocked the gun ban, and in response, New Mexico's Governor revised her previous order to limit its scope to playgrounds and public parks for the next 30 days.
The most concerning aspect of these unchecked executive orders is that these governors are doing it on purpose. They are aware that it is unlawful, but they continue to do it with full disrespect for our political system and legislature.
People believe a governor has the ability to tell them what to do. This is what I have been fighting with my lawsuit against Orange County. (I have one more hearing in October, and if you want to learn more, please click here. There are links to help support my work below, and I am very grateful to everyone who has partnered with me!)
There has been talk of impeaching this governor, so we'll see what happens.
They are certainly laying the groundwork for a gun grab, and this governor fits the bill well!
