Does your mood dim as the vibrant green landscapes change to grays and the air grows cold? The loss of daylight can greatly affect your motivation, sleep patterns and appetite. If you feel irritable, anxious, socially withdrawn, tired and distracted between October and March, you may have seasonal affective disorder or seasonal depression. Join Northern Dutchess Hospital staff as they discuss healthy coping skills that will keep the winter blahs away. Licensed social worker Allison Gould will discuss symptoms and strategies. Nutrition counselor Roufia Payman will share her secrets for eating to boost happiness and exercise instructor John Verner will demonstrate simple movements that will keep you lifted through the dark days ahead.

This women’s symposium will look at many of the gynecological issues that can arise throughout a woman’s life. A team of physicians will discuss topics such as adolescent gynecology to managing uterine fibroids to voiding dysfunction to breast disease, as well as using the da Vinci robot during surgical procedures. Come learn about minimally invasive robotic surgery, how genetics can increase colon cancer risk and more. Dr. James Nitzkorski, board certified surgical oncologist and member of the general surgery team at Health Quest Medical Practice, will discuss colon cancer screening, treatment and the latest surgical technology.

Learn about the steps you can take to get ready to enroll or re-enroll in the NY State of Health insurance marketplace. The health insurance program manager for the Mid-Hudson Valley’s Maternal Infant Services Network, Lynda Brady, will lead the discussion. Brady is a New York state-trained “navigator” who is knowledgeable about the Affordable Care Act and the insurance products available through the state’s marketplace. She will be joined by Northern Dutchess Hospital patient registration staff for Q&As. This talk focuses on people under age 65.

Winter weather brings a number of hazards that are especially dangerous for older adults who are at a higher risk of hypothermia and falls. Spending so much time inside can also increase risk of depression and weakness due to inactivity. Dr. Jodi Friedman, certified geriatrician and medical director for the Center for Healthy Aging at Northern Dutchess Hospital will offer suggestions to help you bring a ray of sunshine into the long, cold winter ahead.
