| | THE ONLY LEGAL WEAPON YOU CAN CARRY ANYWHERE*
|
| ...AND THE NON-CLASSICAL, NO-BULLSH#T WAY TO USE IT
|
| | By James Ludwig
One
evening, around 11:00pm, I was walking in San Francisco's Mission
District after exiting the train station. I emerged at 16th and
Mission. For those not familiar, this corner is a lively spot,
especially after 10:00pm. Poor people, needy, desperate, enterprising; I
moved alertly as I headed south on Mission back to my place.
Then
I saw in front of me a young, attractive woman, nicely dressed,
slender, walking alone through the described elements, standing out like
a sore thumb, radiating vulnerability and self-consciousness. I could
feel the locals feel her presence, observing her with interest, so I
strolled next to her and asked if she would like me to escort her
through the rough section. She nodded, visibly relieved.
We
walked four blocks together. Her name was Sabrina. And then I
directed her toward her destination on Valencia Street and went my own
way. And I found myself thinking of her today when I began watching
the Guided Chaos DVD "Cane Vs. Knife." [Part 3 of the GC Weapons Series -ed.]
Self-defense master John Perkins begins with a cogent introductory point: the cane is the only weapon that you can openly carry with you anywhere.
Stop and let that in, as it may not have much impact if you have never
given much thought to self-defense. It is a weapon that you can carry
IN YOUR HAND EVERYWHERE.
The value of this is extraordinary. |
| | One of the problems with guns
and knives is that you HAVE TO PULL THEM OUT, and crime data shows that
often there is no time for that. In contrast, the cane is always in
your hand, always ready to go. Also, the cane has length which means
that it provides valued DISTANCE between you and your attacker.
These
are powerful points, enough so that you'd think that nearly everyone
(living in troubled U.S. urban areas) would want a cane.
A
cane is a fantastically valuable weapon, inexpensive, and you don't have
to be a 30 year martial genius to wield it well enough to dissuade attackers. Indeed, street assailants may be morally compromised but at
the same time they are "street smart;" given that stick you are
carrying, maybe they will look for a different target!
If what
I've written has gotten your attention, then your next need would be to
learn the basics of how to defend with a cane. Enter "Cane Vs. Knife,"
perhaps better titled "Self-Defense with Canes," because the movements
you will learn from this DVD will protect you in multiple scenarios, not
just knife attacks. And the style of
teaching departs totally from stick work that you will find in
traditional arts. I could write forever on this subject, how
traditional arts shroud the essence of self-defense in endless layers of
extrinsic nonsense - costumes, rituals, out-of-date movements, and
utterly unrealistic fighting scenarios.
Let me indulge in
just one illustration: in traditional arts like aikido, stick work is
always done with a partner (in other words, two people with sticks,) in a
highly choreographed style. Suffice it to say that a real attacker will not choreograph his movements for you, so you are already in trouble.
|
| | But it gets worse: how likely
are you to have a stick-on-stick encounter with someone in a
contemporary American city?
But if you carry a cane and run into an
attacker of whatever kind, your cane will represent you well, and
Perkins explains how, in detail. Starting with the bare essence of
stick wisdom, stripped of dated and over-stylized moves, he lays out the
basics of how to move intelligently. You'll
discover that it doesn't look much like the theatrics you see in action
films, though the brute simplicity of it may at times be breathtaking.
If you are a hard core martial artist, you will value the
exercise of "running the gauntlet," which prepares you to use the cane
against multiple skilled attackers. But if you're a beginner you will
benefit from just learning the basic technique called "spearing," a
straight-ahead strike with considerable power that keeps your attacker
at a distance.
And for those
who are perpetually thinking about beginning to train in martial arts,
there is another benefit beyond cane self-defense: practicing with your
cane will yield the benefit of the "body intelligence" taught
throughout Guided Chaos. That is, you will begin to acquire fundamental
aptitudes like relaxation, body unity, rooting skills, managing
distance, and looseness.
Reflecting back on Sabrina:
Doesn’t she represent nearly all of us? Certainly all women, smaller
men who feel unsure of themselves, and most people over 50? There are
moments of anxiety as we encounter the elements of America’s troubled
cities. If you can relate, no need to wait until one of your joints
lets you down. Think about getting a cane.
I just ordered mine!

trained extensively in aikido but abandoned the testing process at the
first kyu level because it was hampering his martial development.
Instead, Ludwig worked "off mat" with high ranking aikido and bagua
artists in a free-form style, dumping conventional choreography and
technique memorization. Subsequently he has also trained with
practitioners of various arts/sports - BJJ, muay thai, boxing, wing
chun. Ludwig has used the art of Guided Chaos to inform, validate, and
organize his training practice and to maximize internal skills within
the context of street-realistic self-defense. |

"I just watched like 4 minutes of the new GCC video. WOW. I've been using and training GCC since 2000 and GC since 2003. You guys know my story:) I'm actually speechless. It's that good and has evolved that much! Just the little course correction, I watched on the GCC chop (saying hi) is a gold mine and could be a life saver when fractions of a second count. I'm very honored to be considered part of the GC family. I'm so impressed that you never stop refining and finding ways to make this art teachable to all kinds of people.
Love you guys, Bob"
