SELF DISCOVERY--
AND THE ART OF THE POSSIBLE
How to Explore Dynamic Movement that Transcends Combative Forms
By Yosef Susskind, GC 4th Degree

LtCol Al often recounts that one of his Marines, Major Marc Beaudreaux, who was initiated into the art and earned his 1st Dan while they were deployed in combat, described Guided Chaos as “the art of the possible.” The more we limit our conception of what movements are possible in combat, the more we limit our creativity, our mastery, our survivability.
The gross example of a self-limiting conception of the possible is practicing forms or “karate-by-numbers,” with scripted attacks and counters. A more subtle example is the doctrine of the “correct” punch, where students are taught that adapting mid-strike is “sloppy technique.” “Correct” strikes are the strikes they see in the mirrored wall of their dojo; the remainder of potential human motion is disallowed.

I have seen the long-term results of this sort of neuromuscular conditioning. Once these students initiate a technique, they feel the need to see it through unaltered, and must then reset for their next attack. They are conditioned to believe that they can only adapt in between their strikes, and become willfully blind to the changes within the beats.

Even students of Guided Chaos may have a crystalized idea of what combative movement is. These preconceived notions set a limit on creativity. Remember that Grand Master John’s original name for GC was The Art of Universal Motion with a Martial Application. Our goal is not to construct a set framework for combative movement, which limits possibilities, but to explore the totality of human movement, and to cultivate the creativity to apply it masterfully in combat. When masters of human movement combine creativity with ruthless intention, they become master killers.
In contact flow, we must test our perceived limitations and expand our conception of possible body movement. To this point, Robert DeBold, 2nd Dan in GC and 6th Dan in Isshin-Ryu Karate, describes Guided Chaos as “the art of self-discovery.” We all must learn to fight within our own body. Every body has certain movements that come easily and intuitively, which may give it advantage over other bodies. Every body has limitations that must be incorporated into its movement.

When civilization fails to pacify, nature enters us into a demolition derby. Some of us get muscle cars. Some get pickups. Some get crotch rockets. Some get school buses or cement mixers or ice-cream trucks. Some get a golf cart that looks like a Hummer. Some get a sedan that looks like a golf cart. Some have bald tires and bent exhaust systems and worn-down brakes. Some feel like they might break down at any moment. While the make, model, and condition of the vehicle are all significant factors, the only way for a driver to maximize their survivability is by becoming the master of their motion, and applying that mastery with ruthless intent.
To become masters of our motion, we must cast off the fetters of our preconceived notions about possible movement. In order to test the limits of possibility in contact flow, we must be willing to take risks, to try something outlandish that may fail epically. We must exercise strength of character, so that we are not concerned with simulated defeat in a training setting. We must be willing to move into uncharted territory, into new positions where we have no plan, and to trust our creativity to blaze a trail to victory.

Next month (Nov 3rd-5th), John Perkins, Grand Master and Creator of Guided Chaos, and Senior Master Al Ridenhour, will be administering our 2017 immersion seminar on the fundamentals of dynamic movement. The seminar will show how to build the neuromuscular foundation for developing creativity and explosivity, and becoming the master of your movement. I strongly encourage any and all students of body movement dynamics to join us at GC Headquarters in Elmsford NY.
