REVIEWS ARE COMING IN...
How to Fight for Your Life covers a lot of ground in a short space. As any good self-defense book should, it all starts with Situational Awareness. If you are constantly plugged in to your Ipod or your Blackberry, just consider yourself another item on the Predator's Menu Board. This book has excellent advice on avoiding confrontation and helping you to set up trigger points that will prepare you to defend yourself in a devastating, yet legal, manner once the line is crossed. The techniques described are well-illustrated with good photgraphs that demonstrate what you should and should not do when defending yourself. More importantly, the techniques are simple to practice and use. This isn't an elaborate martial arts dance class. It is pure focused aggression. I would suggest Attack Proof, 2nd Edition as a good companion piece for those who want to further explore the information raised in this excellent book.5 STARS No Nonsense, No BS, Just Pure Self Defense, July 10, 2010This review is from: How to Fight for Your Life: Enhanced Reality-Based Close Combat Training for Self-Defense and Street Survival (Kindle Edition)

5 STARS The Title Says It All..., July 9, 2010
By M. Kaminski This review is from: How to Fight for Your Life: Enhanced Reality-Based Close Combat Training for Self-Defense and Street Survival (Kindle Edition)The precursor to the full-blown defense system of Guided Chaos, "How to Fight for Your Life" presents well-written, concise, life saving information. It is devoid of the superfluous sportive techniques found in many books of this genre. In fact, while written with the civilian in mind, the skills and techniques contained within are no nonsense and lethal; applicable for life and death combat and easily trump the grappling/MMA techniques being taught in today's military. This book is well written with diagrams and pictures that aptly depict the information being presented. I would whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone looking to build a solid self-defense foundation followed by Attack Proof - 2nd Edition for follow-on training into the system of Guided Chaos.

TEXAS SEMINAR: "Let's Get a Show of Hands!"
We're looking to do a 2-day seminar in Austin in September or October.
If you're in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston or Austin area, let us know if you can make it by replying to this Newsletter or sending us an email.
Saturday would be an intensive Guided Chaos Combatives crash course that we guarantee will have you walking out with superior self-defense skills, no matter what your background.
Sunday would be an overview of the entire Guided Chaos Adaptive Defense System, basically taking tai chi-like internal principles and supercharging them for ruthless combat in the defense of your life. Just think of it as "Tai Chi on Steroids."GROUNDFIGHTING INSANITY!
CAN A WOMAN REALLY SURVIVE A 330 LB MAN IN HER GUARD?!
YOU MUST READ THIS "I was talking with a woman at the gym. She was taking a self defense
course where they stressed fighting out of the guard position. I asked
her why she would pull someone like me (who weighs 330 Ibs) between
her legs while she is flat on her back. That has the potential to be a
very dangerous situation for her. It would be better if we were down
there for her to kick the crap out of me while trying to get away. She
looked at me funny... I hope she never has to use what she has learned."
--ARRead this definitive argument written by GC student Lt. Daryl Tate,
Defensive Tactics Coordinator, Training Division
Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST), State of Oregon"In my humble opinion, the problem with a woman who willingly puts or
allows her attacker inside her guard during physical assaults like
rape, is that she is taking a huge risk that her attacker will present
the opportunity to properly fight from this position.Don’t get me wrong, I know that there are plenty of competent BJJ
practitioners who can snap an arm like a twig, or choke a person out
within a couple of seconds, but in order to carry out these attacks,
some considerations must be made. First, the assumption has to be made
that the attacker has not beaten the woman half to death long before
he ends up in her guard. I think most grapplers will agree that the
most difficult time to pull off a submission is when your opponent is
bashing your face in. In almost twenty years of policing, I have
encountered many rape victims that were severely beaten before, during
and after the assault. Additionally, to be successful with any type of
submission, certain mechanics must be followed. It doesn’t matter how
fast you are, you still have to follow the steps to make it work. This is when, I believe, many people who are highly influenced by
grappling tend to glaze over. I remember observing a Defensive Tactics
class at my agency just prior to taking over the program. The
instructor was demonstrating a handgun retention technique from the
ground that went as follows:
• Officer places attacker in his guard
• The attacker grabs the officer’s holstered firearm
• Officer secures the weapon by placing his hand on top of the
attacker’s grabbing hand
• Officer sits up and places his free hand over and then under the
attacker’s grabbing arm
• Officer grabs his own wrist
• Officer then peels the attacker’s hand off the holstered weapon
• Officer continues moving the attacker’s hand to the back of the
attacker’s head to secure a shoulder lock.I'm not sure, but I believe this is called a figure four or kimura
lock. The demonstration itself was flawless, but the problem came with
the students trying to remember all of the steps.I remember two students in particular that were working together. The
female couldn’t have been more than 120 lbs, while her partner was an
easy 265. No matter how much she tried, she just could not secure the
maneuver with her partner’s gorilla like arms, let alone remember all
of the steps. The instructor made his way to me and asked what I
thought. I said that it was a good technique, but that there are a lot
of steps involved. The instructor assured me that by the end of the
session, the students would have it down pretty well. Still seeing the
perplexed look on my face, the instructor asked me what I would do in
this position. I said that before the attacker ended up in my guard, I
would be kicking his knees, shins, groin and even his head if he made
it available, but for this position specifically, I would be punching
the windpipe and/or gouging out the eyes. In contrast, my steps would
look something like this:
• Officer ends up on his back and starts to immediately deliver kicks
to the knees, shins, groin and face
• If the attacker is able to get close enough to grab the officer’s
holstered firearm, then the officer will deliver a series of strikes
and/or gouges to the windpipe and eyes.I’ll never forget how he stood there for several seconds with his
mouth open before saying, “Yeah… that would work.”Now, could the first technique work? Sure it could, but in a life and
death situation, why go through all of these extra mechanics when
there is a quicker and more effective way to gain the desired result,
which is to escape.Bottom line, you have to be extremely proficient to take a fixed-step
defense maneuver and make it fit into a real life dynamic situation.
Many grapplers would argue that fighting from the guard is totally
adaptive because there are many variations of arm bars and chokes.
Although true, you still can’t ignore that the success of the
techniques are directly related to performing near flawless mechanics
during a stressful encounter. Not impossible, but far from easy.Through Guided Chaos, I have learned a simple and effective concept in
teaching law enforcement and civilians how to fight on the ground. I
like to refer to it as “the scramble”.Probably the best example is the prototypical battle between a dog and
cat. I don’t know how many of you have actually witnessed these two go
at it, but I will tell you that nine times out of ten, a cat will whip
a dog’s ass. The cat just has to be forced to fight. Inherently, the
cat knows that the dog is stronger; therefore, he cannot allow the dog
to use its weight to pin it down. So what does the cat do? He
scrambles and claws the hell out of the dog in the process. It’s
almost impossible to hold the cat down, due to the constant moving and
striking. The dog wants to control first, which forces it to react at
least one beat behind what the cat is doing. To make matters worse for
the dog, the cat is only fighting to get away, not to stay there and
battle it out with the much stronger dog. As soon as there is an
opportunity to escape, the cat is gone.Similarly, if a woman is taught how to kick to the knees and groin,
strike the trachea, and eye gouge while scrambling to get away, then
she becomes more than a formidable opponent for the much stronger man.
So let’s say that the woman is able to get up and runs, but her
attacker catches her. What does she do? Personally, I think it would
be pretty difficult for the attacker to catch her with a busted knee,
windpipe, or missing eye, but if he is able to, then she does it again
with even more ferocity. Not long ago, I had this same discussion with another instructor, and
he said that fighting from the guard was especially good if the attack
was sudden and occurred in an area with little room to move or
scramble. Ok, I can see that, but how much room do you need to stick a
finger in the eye socket, crush the throat or just claw the hell out
of the face?Since this scramble concept is so close to how we react to something
or someone we want to stay away from, it becomes pretty difficult for
the attacker to stop it. Here’s a simple, but I think universal
example: ever tried changing a one year old baby’s diaper who had
other plans? Think about how the baby naturally moved and rolled to
areas of least resistance. Think about how much energy you exerted,
and how frustrated you became trying to contain him. Personally, there
have been numerous times when my daughter nearly exhausted me trying
to accomplish this task. Couple this with trying to dodge her
inadvertent kicks to my groin area and you end up with a fairly
refined baby self defense system. The absolute worst was trying to
put clothes on her when she would rather run around the house naked.
Now, if a baby can be somewhat successful with this, imagine what an
able-bodied adult with a little destructive intent could accomplish."
CAN YOU SURVIVE ON THE GROUND? ...Are you SURE? There is a world of difference between
competitive submission fighting and real life and death combat, where the only rule is chaos.

• With former forensic homicide investigator John Perkins. Perkins has trained in Native American "Anything Goes" fighting principles since the age of 5. Over a period of 20 years he combined it with experience gained from his savage police assignments (where people routinely ended up in the hospital or morgue), illegal pit-fighting, World War II Close Quarters Combat, the internal aspects of tai chi and the ancient Greek combat art of Elephtheri Pali. Unlike the "fight-by-the-numbers" self-defense methods popular today, the Groundfighting component of GC is probably unlike anything you've ever seen before.
• Iraq War veteran Lt. Col. Al Ridenhour USMC. Infantry unit commander and instructor of unarmed combat, he is also a GC master.
• And special guest GC 2nd Degree Tony Dey, Champion of Cage Combat, Bare-knuckle, No-weight Limit and Vale Tudo matches in Kiev, Holland, Florida and Mississippi and former head bouncer at some of New York City's most violent nightclubs.
"I write this letter with a sense of deep humility. Having finished watching your DVD series I can state with no fear of contradiction: Next to a real, 'living' instructor your DVD series is probably the best training that any person can hope for. It is also better than many of the instructors you get out there, because of the nonsense that so many of them teach. Thank you for the gift you have given to humanity. Your book 'Attackproof' and the 'Attackproof Companion Series' stand unparalleled in the annals of self-defence and security training."
