This video yields tremendous insights with repeated viewings, ESPECIALLY if you use the MATRIX’s Slow-mo Looping function. Watching GM Perkins’ movement closely is a goldmine of exploration and personal growth. GM John explains and demonstrates: Have no resistance to start with. If you do get tight, release immediately. Do this regardless of whether you are stronger or heavier because you never know what the enemy is capable of. Releasing immediately opens up new opportunities you could never find otherwise. You must distinguish between exerting energy to attack (strike, unbalance, etc.) and exerting energy to resist. These are all just words you’re reading now but in watching this exceptional video, you’ll see that [moving] pictures are worth a thousand words. You can get them to resist unconsciously with a Pulse (fake energy) and then exploit it. Your release should involve a complete change of position (including your root) to maximize exploitation of their weakness. Tremendous subtleties and movement options demonstrated in video which needs to be watched over and over. Whoever is more sensitive to -- and able to change sooner because of -- perceived resistance, will win. These openings and your sensitivity to resistance allow you to hitch hike off it and multi-hit/ricochet to further strikes instantaneously. The sensation of release is like slipping on a banana peel or moving like a monkey [this obviously is not an endorsement of formatted monkey “styles”]. John emphasizes that the throwing/unbalancing shown in this video is not a directive to push people away like in tai chi, but to penetrate and destroy them with strikes. The splashing/dropping action of GC hitting prevents this “throwing” in the first place. Don’t try to over-analyze or convert these teachings into “techniques” or you will fail. You must flow slowly and experiment and build the automatic responses into your subconscious. This is the only way to build this skill of “Resisting the Resistance” effectively.
