WHY I DEVELOPED GUIDED CHAOS
Some folks wonder why I developed Guided Chaos.
As a kid I knew there was something more than just getting the first shot in on an attacker because quite often I did not have the luck to have someone stand in front of me and give me time to set up for a fight. Usually it was more than one or a sneak attack. Luckily most of the sneak attacks were not carried out by professional hit men.
What I did learn was that relying on just speed and timing and strength was not always enough. Many of my attackers were larger, faster and stronger than myself. What I did learn was that if I could slip a punch I could remain in the fight for at least another half a second. Hopefully my attacker would then be thrown off his game and I could capitalize on that and, in most cases, prevail....but that was not even enough because multiple attackers were often involved.
I was brought up in Yonkers, New York which kept out of the limelight due primarily to the proximity of NYC. Maybe there was something in the water but in certain neighborhoods you could almost count on getting into a situation if you came across the loosely joined gangs of that time. You had neighborhoods of various ethnic backgrounds that would kick your butt just for being an outsider. I did, however, find that there was some adventure to be had by moving around the city and making friends with the local gang members. These fights were often not to the depth of the criminal attacks that could occur in various places especially at night. You did get the beat down if you started to win against the "Alpha" from the groups but if you could get your stuff off so fast that it did not register and move out of the circle it often paid off. Maybe hitting one or two more from the circle as you left was workable.
Now to the point: If I did not have serious balance and sensitivity along with flexibility that was far greater than what regular martial arts or combatives required I would have had a much more difficult time to say the least. Over the years I found the wisdom of some of the internal methods of fighting to be a great advantage. Mixing the internal with the more brutal WWII methods that I learned from my uncles and other sources gave me advantages that few could experience.
As a police officer on the streets working the back up unit on a regular basis I was able to get an education in violence that most folks don't get to experience.
My basic function was to respond only to violent felonies in progress. Of course this meant that I had time to think as I drove and walked into an ongoing fight. Many of these were unarmed affairs while some were armed situations with insane or chemically hyped up opponents who could withstand night stick beatings by multiple officers. Many officers were often hurt enough to seek medical attention from some of these human monsters. Of course we could not just shoot them down or break their necks but I found that keeping them off balance and slamming them into walls at high speed was helpful. The rear naked strangle was allowed in those days but to get one on a psycho was not often easy due to the fact that they often tried to poke your eyes out or bite you or any number of nasty things. So getting a good set up was important.
Don't get me wrong--some of these folks who were not so combative could be taken down by basic good Jiu Jitsu throws but the really activated ones were nearly impossible to reach without some damage. Even fracturing their skulls was often not enough to get them in line. So you either had to have a whole bunch of officers wrestle around with them until they tired or, in some cases, expired or have a way to keep them under control until the exact time came about for a good sleeper hold. By the way, it was good to have other officers there to hold onto the opponent while applying the sleeper hold just to keep the perp's hands off your eyes or groin.
Recently I had a situation that could have turned ugly but for the application of a purely internal methodology. Without giving too many details I will describe what happened: I was on a long line at a Governmental office waiting for over 40 minutes. I had my cane with me because my knees are in need of replacement so they are very weak. For some reason, three men were in various positions next to me. The smallest was over 280 and they were fresh out of prison by my best "cop" sense. I was dealing with another issue behind me when I saw one of the men who was at least 10 yards away run towards the man who was right in front of me on line. I was standing with my side to him. I stepped to the only spot I could toward the wall against where the third man was leaning. I don't think the first two wanted to fight with me but the man against the wall stepped forward and put out his left hand toward my left arm while forming a fist with his right. I was leaning on my cane and simutaneaously butt dropped the guy who was originally in front of me while I dropped-pushed the attacking man in the chest, sending him into the wall at great speed. It all took maybe 2 seconds.
I shouted "hold it" and they froze. This was because the one who was butt bounced landed on the back of the pew-like bench and the one who hit the wall was dazed to the point that I thought he would fall to the ground. I told them that I was the law which is sort of a stretch and they carried their dazed buddy out of the building.
The situation could have gone terribly wrong if I did not have the ability to "bounce" the two men. They all were in prison yard shape and if I depended on just striking and throwing in the traditional sense I am sure one of them would have gotten in a serious shot or even gotten a knife into the fight. Instead, having the timing and knowledge of how a real hand to hand fight could go down allowed me to take advantage and shut down the situation before anything else could happen. If I had been attacked by all of them all at once and did not move from the circle it would have gone bad for me.
Most folks who only do internal martial arts without the experience of getting hit from all sides would've gotten crushed. In my opinion, a person needs to know how to fight combativeley as well as internally to maximize their chances in real life and death fights. That is why I developed Guided Chaos--BUT--you must learn your combatives first and foremost to keep you alive until you can get "good" with the internal aspects. The mixture of both is something that takes time to develop.
If you don't have a lot of time, Guided Chaos Combatives is the first part of Guided Chaos and is simple, highly effective and easy to learn in weeks with rigorous practice. it contains authentic, proven, World War II Close Combat mixed with key Guided Chaos principles (such as Dropping Energy and footwork) to enhance power and efficiency. Tremendous personal improvement can be made studying the Kill the Enemy and Attackproof Companion Part 1 DVDs--much of it without the need of training partners (though having partners always helps). These 2 DVDs cover much of the Guided Chaos Combatives material (we used to call it just "Close Combat") that is more completely explained in our book "How to Fight for Your Life." Later in 2012 we will becoming out with a complete Guided Chaos Combatives course on DVD and as an On Demand video download.
If you are not in the NY area, there are relatively few reputable combatives school. Many of the ones advertised with a lot of hype these days are just that--hype. They have either been watered down, made politically correct or mixed with sportive, elaborate or simply nonsensical methods to the point where they bear little resemblance to the techniques taught by Fairbairn, Sykes and Applegate. If you see someone touting Super-Secret stuff the Army won't teach you, look elsewhere. My advice is to go to Bradley Steiner's website and order his videos and books on real world combatives. If you wish to go farther in your training I suggest visiting myself or Bradley Steiner for personal advice or lessons.
Take care,
John Perkins
ENLIGHTENMENT AND THE PROPER PRACTICE OF DRILLS
Having been a student of Grand Master Perkins' for 17yrs this year has made me realize the importance of proper consistant practice, whether you attend classes regularly or only once in a while. If you are willing to make the exercises a part of your daily regimen you will achieve a level of absorption in every aspect of your life--which is the true goal of any practitioner of Martial Arts.
Case in point:
In my chosen profession (Tattooing) you have to accept that you will always find a crossroads of different people due to the popularity of this art. Sometimes you have to deal with people who have chemical addictions and how they wish to conduct themselves. I am pretty sure at this point everyone reading this is ready to hear about some drug addict bloodbath of a fight, but your wrong. Bloodbath, possibly, but as it turns out...not at all.
Having come back from a long weekend I went to the shop to touch up a client's tattoo. Working with true artists, the majority of those I work with were already there also doing their thing. During the course of the evening one of my co-worker's clients came by with a friend. While standing outside and having to listen to an argument of sports opinions I noticed that the young man who was with the client began to wobble a bit. Before anyone knew what happened, he stiffened up and free-fell like a concrete surfboard straight backwards.
What happened next astonished myself and those who witnessed it. I Immediately Dropped with lightning speed and with one step and one hand motion, met his skull approx. 4" from the floor. I lightly tapped his head in the opposite direction to negate and redirect the energy and neither his head nor my hand ever touched the concrete, which no doubt would have created a bloodbath with his skull splitting open. Possibly even damaging my hand.
The client and the tattoo artist who were standing there and saw the whole thing go down basically stood in shock and disbelief that I was able to move that quickly, especially since I am considered (and confirmed to be) the old man in the shop. After a few minutes and some liquids this young man was breathing normally and came back to the real world. At that point the topic of his 7 day drug binge came up...could of been much worse...I will deal with him when I see him again...verbally of course.
You may never think you will see the true results of your diligent practice and consistent awareness...but it will appear though, when you need it...

KILL THE ENEMY:
Close Quarters Combat
for U.S. Military Personnel
"The Kill the Enemy video is the greatest work of modern combat of our time!
In the dirty bloody world of real combat there are no second place winners. In combat there is only Kill and come home. John trains you for just such an encounter. There is nothing in the world that can ever prepare you for the harsh cold reality of combat, but John Perkins has found a way to bridge the gap between school and real world no-holds-barred REALITY!"--Captain Jonathan Edwards, 101st Airborne/Air Assault
POLITICALLY INCORRECT
HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT...?
In 1989, the RUSSIANS instituted a hand-to-hand combat methodology that far surpassed ours in terms of SIMPLICITY and EFFECTIVENESS. Ironically, it was nearly IDENTICAL to the system OUR military used--BACK IN WORLD WAR II!! WHAT HAPPENED?!!Through a political process too convoluted and distressing to elaborate on here, over the years, our soldiers' hand-to-hand training has become convoluted, mis-directed, and relatively ineffective except under "sportive or "competitive" (i.e. unrealistic) conditions.
KILL THE ENEMY is a simple video guide that does away with the boxing-grappling-locking nonsense that has become the "politically correct" standard of training for our soldiers in recent years. Instead of subjecting our military personnel to methods that could get them killed, Master Perkins and Lieutenent Colonel Ridenhour USMC provide basic, effective methods proven in World War II. Distilled from Part 1 of our book ATTACK PROOF, these strategies (Guided Chaos Combatives) are the basic tools that John Perkins' Guided Chaos builds upon. Topics include:
- Comparison: US vs. Russian Hand-to-Hand Training
- The Myth of Grappling
- Defensive/Offensive Posture
- Basic Hand Strikes
- Bag/Dummy Training/10 Seconds of Hell
- Wrestling the Rifle
- Covering Your Back
- A Fantasy Knife Fight
- Rear Choke Scenarios
- Ground Fighting Fantasies
- Conclusion: History Doesn't Lie!

"We can hit the eyes and throat too, so what's the difference?"
The difference is that we're better at it--as well as defending against it, because both require Sensitivity and Adaptation--something we train exclusively.YOUR INSTRUCTORS:
Former forensic crime scene expert John Perkins:
Perkins has trained in Native American "Anything Goes" fighting principles since the age of 5. Over a period of 20 years he combined it with experience gained from over 100 extremely violent arrests (where people routinely ended up in the hospital or morgue), unsanctioned pit-fighting, World War II Close Quarters Combat, the internal aspects of tai chi and the ancient Greek combat art of Elephtheri Pali. In 1978, he formally created Ki Chuan Do and the principles of Guided Chaos [in1998 he officially changed the name of the art itself to Guided Chaos]. Unlike the "fight-by-the-numbers" self-defense methods popular today, the Groundfighting component of GC is probably unlike anything you've ever seen before.
Iraq and Afghanistan combat veteran Lt. Col. Al Ridenhour USMC:
Infantry unit commander and instructor of unarmed combat, he is also a Guided Chaos Master. Security Manager, Assistant Operations Officer, and the Anti-Terrorism Force Protection Officer for the II Marine Expeditionary Force in Iraq. Worked with U.S. Customs Service and U.S. Border Patrol for the JTF-6 counter drug mission. Has trained current and former members of US Marines, US Army Special Forces, NYPD, US Air Force OSI and US Air Marshal Service

"Let me start by saying I thought I'd seen all that the world of 'reality-based self defence' had to offer, so for the easily bored out there, I'll cut to the chase. What I witnessed on the weekend of 26 and 27 March is the closest thing I've come across that resembles a modern-day, reality-based martial art and not just another 'combatives system'. Does it work? Hell, yeah! I got my arse well and truly kicked and at times felt like I was in the middle of a Jason Bourne fight scene."
--Clive Girdham, former Senshido and Geoff Thompson instructor [excerpted from the exclusive review of the Guided Chaos Australia Seminar in the Aug. print edition of BLITZ MAGAZINE: Australia's #1 Martial Arts magazine volume 25, issue 6
"Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period."
---Bob Miller, Corrections Officer at the largest facility in Oregon
"Guided Chaos is the only thing that has worked for me in real life situations. Unless you are 6'3" and 285 lbs of muscle, most of the Defensive Tactics stuff (ok all of the Defensive Tactics stuff) will get you hurt. And even if you are that big and strong, there is always someone bigger and stronger and there may be a lot of them. Nothing like dealing with one guy and it turns into a free for all with all his buddies. This is where you literally need to 'adapt or die' and Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period.
"If I had to pick only one martial arts system in the world it would be Guided Chaos..."
--Dr. Robert L. O'Block founder and publisher of the American College of Forensic Examiners International, American Board for Certification in Homeland Security
"...through watching videos put out by attackproof.com, and by
reading Attackproof, the book, I have learned real survival skills.
These skills have been learned...at an exponentially higher practical

--Matthew Shoener, Police Officer, Scranton, PA
