Is Empty Hand Defense the Same as Knife Defense?
|
|
The idea of training as if your
opponent always has a knife is a popular martial arts concept but the
problem lies in the techniques used in the first place.
If
someone is armed with a knife and has murderous intent, almost no
bare-handed sleight of hand movements will prevail, especially in a lone
or gang sneak/assassination-style attack.
The way I learned to
use a knife as a killing tool is not based on any stab/slash by numbers
methodology. Right from the start the whole body is used and the knife
is part of the body. Movement happens from almost any position without
any set up. Using the 5 principles of balance, looseness, body unity,
sensitivity and adaptive movement along with any hand weapon is an
enhancement of the use of the weapon BUT the knife also has advantages
that bare-hand fighting cannot ever match.
First of all, a knife
needs nearly very little pressure to cut through flesh. A knife makes
all parts of the human body vulnerable while hands and feet are far more
limited in the amount and type of damage that can be applied in a
fight. The sheer ferocity and chaotic nature of a murderous knife attack
containing surprise and multiple stab and slash wounds from virtually
any direction makes a sad joke of most hand vs. knife techniques.
With
this knowledge we take the user of a knife to a high level of lethal
ability. Based on thousands of Forensic Crime Scene reports and personal
experience I found that the basic brutal methods that I first learned
as a kid with my father and uncles were just plain REAL. The
after-action reports and my direct work on homicide scenes as a blood
stain expert where knives were used showed me that the basic, seemingly
insane tactics from West Virginia bore out the truth of the fact that NO
knife attack or fight is ever predictable.
Stylized "waving" and
close contact hand vs. knife methods all fail when put to the test in
our crazed knife fighter/assassin simulations.
|
|
So in answer to the question, "Is it better for combat to practice bare-handed
techniques as if your partner is armed with a blade?" the answer is
simply NO. You will not have an advantage against a bare-handed attack
if all you practice is hand to knife fantasy techniques. If you attempt
to strike with full power against a knife wielder you open your body
including your attacking limb to damage which, in most cases, is
catastrophic in nature.
One well-trained knifer can
inflict incredible damage even to multiple unarmed opponents. The human
body is just meat and bone (which is what a knife is designed to cut);
blood flows easily, not to mention muscular action breaks down due to
severed muscles and nerves.
Yes there are methods of fighting
against a knife that are different that will tilt some of the fight in
your favor but the Fantasy stuff in movies like "The Hunted" will get
you killed. We prove this over and over again in seminars where the
knife movement is based on irrational-knife-wielding-maniac training
drills. Even using a knife against a knife-wielding maniac is not much
of an advantage, if any. In most cases the maniac will get in just as
much or more damage as the trained, stylized and methodical knife
wielder. Try it for yourself. Try it in all sorts of places like
stairways, elevators or inside vehicles.
In Guided Chaos and
Guided Chaos Combatives training we drill for the 2 second fight. Here
we explode with a barrage of strikes and kicks from
all necessary directions assuming that the attackers are possibly armed.
In most real life knife attacks the assailant does not show a blade if
he intends to use it. There can be and often is more than one attacker
as in robberies. Your defense must be exceptionally powerful and
instantaneous. Your attack should be over in under 2 seconds. Move in
such a way that you are unavailable but unavoidable.
|
|
In the more
rare case where an assailant presents a knife and escape is impossible,
your defense must be done so that you do not get close to the knife
while dishing out kicks from standing or grounded positions (as in
GC ground-fighting where the attacker becomes the receiver of a severe
beating with your boots).
Unfortunately if you're attacked at
close range without warning you may have to fight from a deficit
position. You may be bleeding and one or more of your limbs as well as
organs may be severely injured. But to fantasize that you will easily
just move your arms and hands in such a way that you will move along
with the blade in some flowing manner against a presented blade is
suicidal.
Why present your flowing arms to an edged weapon?
Instead, if you can't escape, get some distance and get your feet into
action while protecting your vitals with your arms and hands and move
like a blur. Of course if any objects are handy use them to keep the
knife at bay or for cover whenever possible. A chair is a good example
of this. I actually used one in a knife fighting incident to break up
two determined knife fighters within the confines of a kitchen.
Don't
forget the blood factor. Blood on the floor is very slippery. I call
this type of fight a Blood Dance for obvious reasons. To think that you
can just block and move in on a blade that is in high speed deadly
motion is delusional to say the least.
Learn to kick like a
combination jackhammer/machine gun while using your arms for protecting
your throat, eyes, abdomen and chest. Practice blinding-fast kicking
while maintaining balance on various indoor and outdoor terrain
surfaces. Learn to use Modified Native American Ground-fighting against
armed single and multiple attackers.
Nothing is foolproof. Just
don't be foolish and think some movie magic or exotic or secret cool
stuff will prevail against a blade. I usually visualize a knife fight
like walking into a fan-blade of death just to keep some honesty in my
training. --GM Perkins

ATTACKPROOF WEAPONS SERIES PART 2: KNIFE DEFENSE
Thomas Edison supposedly said, "Ninety percent of genius is knowing what doesn't work." Nowhere is that more true than in defending yourself, unarmed, against a knife attack. If you practice something that is theoretically effective, against theoretical attacks intended (even subconsciously) to allow the theoretical defense to work, you may be badly surprised by the different dynamic of a real attack, right before you are gravely injured. In the Guided Chaos Weapons Series DVD, "Knife Defense," John Perkins, Al Ridenhour and their students go to great lengths to equip viewers with that first 90% of knowledge. They also offer valuable advice to help you begin to fill in the last 10%. --Ari Kandel

"You're Either IN the Fight or You're OUT!" IMPORTANT LESSON...
Man Assaults Army Captain in Albany NY
A perfect
example of why one should Attack the Attacker like Brad Steiner would
say.
If you are going to back away then run--don't stand and wait to see
what the assailant is going to pull from his pocket. Train yourself to
close the distance and keep him from pulling a gun or knife...or get
out of there asap. Don't stand around even for a second with your hands
at your sides. Move either IN or OUT.
Keep his hand from getting to
his weapon if you are entering while delivering a slamming attack to his
head/eyes etc.
Don't ever try to grapple him to the ground.
This bad
guy was maybe bluffing by going to his pocket so he could get the
soldier to stay still for him. Maybe he still did have a knife or gun
and decided to just punch the soldier out because he could see he found a
mark that would not fight quickly enough. Don't attack in such a
manner that would allow the assailant to get to his weapon.
This is one
of my favorite odd scenarios...the Bluff and Punch...as I call
it. Usually a person goes for the pocket to scare someone into not
attacking but this bluff keeps the victim still for a bum's rush or
sucker punch style attack. Remember don't think the bluff is always
just a bluff. --GM Perkins
Note also that just prior to the attack, the Captain points at the man and delivers some parting words which may or may not have contributed to the attack. Remember what we advise in Attack Proof: "Avoid violence when possible because you never know who or what you're dealing with." By 'challenging no one' you remove moral ambiguity about whether to fight or not or "preserve your honor" or not. Walk away. However if you need to fight you unleash the dogs of war...because pausing (like the Captain did) could be fatal. --M Kovsky

"This Ain't Your Daddy's Iron Palm Bag!" GUIDED CHAOS™ BRANDED SLAMBAGS Develop accurate, crushing, hand power for strikes and gouges |
|
"As soon as I began using it, I was HOOKED! ...I have long practiced grasping/striking activities against heavy bags and using different hand grips - round balls, piston push grips, etc. However, the Slam bag supersedes ALL of these in my opinion. It does it ALL and more. Just passing it from left to right hands and clawing it - either sideways or pancake style helps create strength and coordination...I even surprised myself at how overwhelmed I was as soon as I started using it." --David H. Smith, Student of Professor Bradley Steiner Instead of "toughening" your hands with a typical iron palm bag and possibly developing painful arthritis as well as thick, ugly, useless callouses, why not turn your hand strikes into "smart bombs" so that all your chops, punches, gouges, rips and tears explode with devastating crushing power and dead-on, free-form timing and accuracy! (The most overlooked qualities in hand weapon development). The Guided Chaos method of strike training using Dropping Force greatly improves hand strength, timing, balance, and sudden impact power while simultaneously developing your tissue and tendon strength without creating ugly and useless "makiwara" callouses. Get your tough, tan, double-stitched cowhide SLAMBAG with the GC logo hot-branded on both sides and start hitting like a jackhammer. |

KILL THE ENEMY: CLOSE QUARTERS COMBAT FOR U.S. MILITARY PERSONNEL
"The Kill the Enemy video is the greatest work of modern combat of our time!
In the dirty bloody world of real combat there are no second place winners. In combat there is only Kill and come home. John trains you for just such an encounter. There is nothing in the world that can ever prepare you for the harsh cold reality of combat, but John Perkins has found a way to bridge the gap between school and real world no-holds-barred REALITY!"

POLITICALLY INCORRECT HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT...? In 1989, the RUSSIANS instituted a hand-to-hand combat methodology that far surpassed ours in terms of SIMPLICITY and EFFECTIVENESS. Ironically, it was nearly IDENTICAL to the system OUR military used--BACK IN WORLD WAR II!! WHAT HAPPENED?!!
Through a political process too convoluted and distressing to elaborate on here, over the years, our soldiers' hand-to-hand training has become convoluted, mis-directed, and relatively ineffective except under "sportive or "competitive" (i.e. unrealistic) conditions.
KILL THE ENEMY is a simple video guide that does away with the boxing-grappling-locking nonsense that has become the "politically correct" standard of training for our soldiers in recent years. Instead of subjecting our military personnel to methods that could get them killed, Master Perkins and Lieutenant Colonel Ridenhour USMC provide basic, effective methods proven in World War II. Distilled from Part 1 of our book ATTACK PROOF, these strategies (Guided Chaos Combatives) are the basic tools that John Perkins' Guided Chaos builds upon. Topics include:
Comparison: US vs. Russian Hand-to-Hand Training The Myth of Grappling Defensive/Offensive Posture Basic Hand Strikes Bag/Dummy Training/10 Seconds of Hell Wrestling the Rifle Covering Your Back A Fantasy Knife Fight Rear Choke Scenarios Ground Fighting Fantasies Conclusion: History Doesn't Lie!

CAN YOU SURVIVE ON THE GROUND? The Fantasy:
A 100 pound woman can fight off a 200 pound man from the Guard position (much less mount him for a "ground and pound"!)
|
|
...ARE YOU SURE? • Do you really want to be locked tight to a dangerous enemy-- who may have weapons or accomplices ready to kick your brains in?
• Do you really want to Mount or go into the Guard position against someone bigger and stronger than you?
• If you're a woman, can you REALLY grapple with a stronger man...and live to tell about it?
There is a world of difference between competitive submission fighting with rules and elite athletes...and real, life-and-death self-defense for REGULAR people, where the only rule is chaos.
DON'T BET YOUR LIFE ON A SPORT!
The built-in restrictions on your training could short-circuit your reactions and get you killed when the spit hits the fan. |

YOUR INSTRUCTORS:
Former forensic crime scene expert John Perkins:
Perkins has trained in Native American "Anything Goes" fighting principles since the age of 5. Over a period of 20 years he combined it with experience gained from over 100 extremely violent arrests (where people routinely ended up in the hospital or morgue), unsanctioned pit-fighting, World War II Close Quarters Combat, the internal aspects of tai chi and the ancient Greek combat art of Elephtheri Pali. In 1978, he formally created Ki Chuan Do and the principles of Guided Chaos [in1998 he officially changed the name of the art itself to Guided Chaos]. Unlike the "fight-by-the-numbers" self-defense methods popular today, the Groundfighting component of GC is probably unlike anything you've ever seen before.

Iraq and Afghanistan combat veteran, Lt. Col. Al Ridenhour USMC:
Infantry unit commander and instructor of unarmed combat, he is also a Guided Chaos Master. Security Manager, Assistant Operations Officer, and the Anti-Terrorism Force Protection Officer for the II Marine Expeditionary Force in Iraq. Worked with U.S. Customs Service and U.S. Border Patrol for the JTF-6 counter drug mission. Blitz magazine article on Guided Chaos Australia Seminar:
"Let me start by saying I thought I'd seen all that the world of 'reality-based self defence' had to offer, so for the easily bored out there, I'll cut to the chase. What I witnessed on the weekend of 26 and 27 March is the closest thing I've come across that resembles a modern-day, reality-based martial art and not just another 'combatives system'. Does it work? Hell, yeah! I got my arse well and truly kicked and at times felt like I was in the middle of a Jason Bourne fight scene." --Clive Girdham, former Senshido and Geoff Thompson instructor

"Guided Chaos is the only thing that has worked for me in real life situations. Unless you are 6'3" and 285 lbs of muscle, most of the Defensive Tactics stuff (ok all of the Defensive Tactics stuff) will get you hurt. And even if you are that big and strong, there is always someone bigger and stronger and there may be a lot of them. Nothing like dealing with one guy and it turns into a free for all with all his buddies.
