AND GUIDED CHAOS IN GENERAL--CAN DEVELOP YOU IN WAYS NOTHING ELSE CAN... |

"I
want to address three distinct questions that someone interested in
Attack Proof might ask:
> First, what is distinctive or unique about the
book? > Second, if I am already a martial artist, how might this fit into
my training and, if not, should I buy it? > And, third, what would my
overall assessment of this book, and the system it presents, be?
1.
Anyone with experience in the martial arts and self-defense world knows
that there is a lot of hype surrounding "real self-defense" methods;
"real self-defense" has become a convenient marketing tool to contrast a
non-traditional system with the supposedly impotent traditional martial
arts.
Attack Proof does not fall into the category of marketing hype;
it does not present unoriginal material as if it were newly discovered,
and its claims to originality seem largely well-grounded.
So, what is
distinctive about the book?
First, it is the only non-traditional system
I've seen which is thoroughly internal in its approach.
Despite its
down-to-earth style and frequently brutal anecdotes, anyone with a
serious interest in and knowledge of arts based on using internal energy
will find the book enormously rich and insightful in its descriptions
of chi and in its innovative drills. The drills are, in fact, a second
distinctive feature of Attack Proof.
Guided Chaos teaches principles,
not primarily techniques, and these principles are: Looseness, Body
Unity, Balance, and Sensitivity.
The drills for these principles are,
simply, brilliant.
A few in particular, like the Body Writing drill, are
easily adaptable, and, with some imagination, I have created a number
of enjoyable but physically intense drills to train balance and body
unity, all of which were inspired by that one superb drill. But many
drills are like this, and if one practices them diligently, one will
dramatically increase one’s general physical skill as well as
internalizing the principles they embody, thus enabling one to devise
one’s own drills.
A final distinctive feature is the practicality of
Guided Chaos.
There is much silliness in the MMA world, rooted in the
patently false idea that things like UFC are “real” fighting, when they
are, in fact, highly structured, rule-based confrontations in which
practically every essential attack for real self-defense is
impermissible. Perkins knows this, and basically says as much, and thus
offers realistic (and therefore mostly unusable for sport fighting)
drills.
As to distinctiveness then, I suggest:
1) it’s an internal
system, with better descriptions of “energy” than most books I’ve seen;
2) excellent drills, worth the price of the book;
3) and, finally, the
book presents Perkins’ own experience, which few conventional martial
artists could claim, on the nature of combat in real life. This is
sobering, and potentially frightening material, but valuable.
2.
One cannot learn physical skills well, through books, generally
speaking. My experience has been that if one already has advanced skill
in martial arts, and has learned to train effectively on one’s own (as
all advanced students should be able to do), books can be very useful. I
came to this book with a fair background in martial arts (2nd black
belt in Tae Kwon Do; Brown belt in Okinawan Karate and Kobudo, some Sil
Lum Fut Ga, and a few years of Systema drills, etc.). From that
perspective, I found it extremely useful, and would recommend to any
martial artist, self-defense, or security personnel. For people with no
formal training, buying the book may be a good investment, but my
assessment is that such a person could not effectively learn the skills
conveyed in the book. Most of them are actually extremely advanced (this
is a component of its being internal: the practitioner must be
accustomed to sensitivity to their own body that a beginner will not
have). I’m confident, however, doing some of the drills will be a net
gain for anyone, regardless of their skill level. --[EDITOR'S NOTE: Our other book, "How to Fight For Your Life" covers Guided Chaos Combatives (the 1st part of Guided Chaos) and is simple enough for anyone to practice on their own].
3. Overall
assessment: the book represents a system which in its current online
presence has not done credit to itself. That should not cloud the fact
that this is a very good book, possibly the most practical book I have
read that was not written by a traditional martial artist. So, if one is
interested in self-defense, personal security, and learning from
someone who has extensive experience with violence, this book should be
on your shelf, and consulted regularly.
I have not addressed the
core philosophy of the book - that violence is essentially chaotic in
nature, and thus traditional martial arts training is ill-suited to
prepare one for it - because it, frankly, is not the best foot with
which to lead in explaining the value of the book. There is validity to
the philosophy; but the proof, and value, comes through its training
regimen, and whatever one thinks of how the author interprets the
training, the work itself is superb. Moreover, the best spontaneous work
I have ever seen has always come from either traditional internal
masters (Paul Rogers’ videos are extraordinary, for anyone with eyes to
see) or the best systema masters (like Ryabko and Vasiliev). It is
extremely hard, however, to learn any of those skills, and this book
will help, while at the same time preparing you to understand violence
accurately, and soberly."

| 2. HOW WAS THE LOS ANGELES SEMINAR?
"Guided Chaos...it's just straight-forward, brutal and effective" |
| | "Watching John, Colonel Al, Tina, Kevin and The Zen Gorilla cut through the mythology and hype around the "street superiority" of certain fighting styles at the seminar in Los Angeles was a notable takeaway for me.
It was, literally, eye-opening for some participants and reaffirmed my belief that,
--for do or die situations, training in the five Guided Chaos principles and conditioning oneself to function with Ruthless Intent ensures the best odds of victory and survival.
(On Being All Inclusive and Beginner Friendly):
After attending both the Philadelphia and Los Angeles seminars, one of the things that I can say I love about the Guided Chaos crew is their insistence on creating an ego-free training zone, and that has the added benefit of making the system extremely beginner-friendly.
A lot of styles I've practiced in the past are either pure bravado or, worse, the most heinous form of arrogance: that which is veiled by false humility. Guided Chaos is neither of those: it's just straight-forward, brutal and effective.
These folks see ego for what it is: an obstacle to learning; and they also understand that an ego trip may also be a magic carpet ride to the local morgue rather than Mt. Olympus."

| "WOW." Customer response to the new GUIDED CHAOS COMBATIVES DVD and ON DEMAND DOWNLOAD:
"I just watched like 4 minutes of the new GCC video. WOW. I've been using and training GCC since 2000 and GC since 2003. You guys know my story:) I'm actually speechless. It's that good and has evolved that much! Just the little course correction, I watched on the GCC chop (saying hi) is a gold mine and could be a life saver when fractions of a second count. I'm very honored to be considered part of the GC family. I'm so impressed that you never stop refining and finding ways to make this art teachable to all kinds of people.
Love you guys, Bob"

GCC is the FIRST LEVEL of Guided Chaos (and absolutely critical)
|
| | Shot on Day 3 of the 2014 Boot Camp, the GUIDED CHAOS COMBATIVES DVD is the perfect complement to the Attackproof Companion Part 1 DVD* but with UPDATED and far more focused material. It also is the essential training guide for
those seeking GCC Course Completion or GCC Instructor Certification.
Additionally, all the methodologies on the GCC DVDs are prerequisites for GC 1st degree.
