ESSENTIAL READING FOR WARRIORS
BY GUIDED CHAOS 3RD DEGREE ARI KANDEL
GETTING YOUR MIND RIGHT
The late close combat instructor Carl Cestari, after a seminar, in
response to a request for book suggestions to further our combative
capabilities, suggested that rather than read instructional books on
close combat, martial arts, shooting, etc., we should study accounts
of Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. He told us that reading
such accounts (both first- and third-person) would likely do a lot
more to train our minds for combat than reading lots of martial arts
textbooks.I would add two caveats:
1) The martial arts instructionals "Attack Proof" and "How To Fight
For Your Life" are two books that warrant repeated reading, as they
are the best written sources I know of to direct your actual training.
2) Don't limit yourself to Medal of Honor recipients, although that is
certainly a good place to start. The key is to fill your mind with
accounts of real people successfully overcoming the reality of deadly
violent situations.Modern civilians reading accounts of Medal of Honor recipients may at
first wonder how they could possibly relate to the protagonists, as
the environment we live in is very different from the one e.g. Audie
Murphy was forced to operate in.I believe one of the key ideas that all the MOH recipients (and others
I'll discuss shortly) have in common is that they all ACTED DECISIVELY
and AGGRESSIVELY at the pivotal moment when faced with extreme danger.
That's what we all need to do in order to successfully protect
ourselves and our loved ones when faced with deadly violence.Having many examples of SUCCESSFUL IMMEDIATE DECISIVE AGGRESSIVE
ACTION floating around our subconscious, crowding out examples of
hesitation, doubt, helplessness, indecision, etc., MAY help to improve
our reactions in the moment of truth. We are all the products of our
experiences. Those of us who thankfully haven't had the opportunity to
build up our own experiences overcoming lethal violence might do well
to fill our minds with the experiences of those who have. This is why it is so important to LISTEN TO and ABSORB the narratives,
reports and statistics that John relates during classes, even when
you're hearing some of them for the fifth time. (It's also why true
accounts are used to illustrate points in John's books.) Trust me,
John isn't telling these stories just because he likes to reminisce,
and he sure as heck isn't bragging (he describes his mistakes as
richly as his successes). John is an expert at implanting potentially
life-saving impressions, facts and suggestions into his students'
subconscious that can affect how the students might later perform
while under deadly attack. Anyone who attended the recent GC Weapons
seminar will recognize this, if you were paying attention. Despite
what you've seen in movies (where most of us unfortunately get much of
our subconscious conditioning about things outside our own realms of
experience, like lethal violence), do you think from this point on
you'll count on one or two shots from your gun (or cuts from your
knife, or hits from your stick) to stop an attacker? Will you assume
you can out-draw him, or "knife-fight" him to a clean resolution? Do
you think the points John was making were reiterated too often or
reinforced by too many real accounts of his own and others'
experiences? Just because you consciously say "okay" to something
doesn't mean your subconscious actually GETS it. What John is doing is
valuable, and you should pay attention, even if you don't think you
"have to."To get back to the subject of this post, I highly recommend these two
books:Deadliest Men: The World's Deadliest Combatants Throughout the Ages
http://www.amazon.com/Deadliest-Men-Worlds-Combatants-Throughout/dp/1581602715/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1290404833&sr=1-1More of the Deadliest Men Who Ever Lived
http://www.amazon.com/More-Deadliest-Men-Ever-Lived/dp/1581606907/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1290404833&sr=1-2The author has basically researched and written up accurate (to the
best of his ability, which is high) and vivid accounts of people (men
and women) and groups who ACTED DECISIVELY and AGGRESSIVELY to prevail
in lethally violent situations. They're not all "good guys," and
indeed some are "complex" on a moral level, but all are EFFECTIVE
(with one possible exception--it depends on whether you consider a
suicidal victory to indeed be a victory). Some accounts in the books to pay particular attention to for our
purposes (all are good but these may be particularly relevant):
(Book 1)
Tom Allen
Jelly Bryce
Nathan Bedford Forrest (see if his portrait in the book reminds you of
a certain GC grandmaster)
Gurkhas
Lance Thomas
(Book 2)
John Wesley Hardin
Joseph Harrison
Kitty Hesselberger and Dorothy Raynes-Simson
Moros (useful to correct some of the myths surrounding the Filipino
martial arts)
John PurcellI won't go into detail here, but do read the books and feel free to
post if you want to discuss anything in particular.Just another step towards gettin' our minds right. . .
