GUIDED CHAOS TRAINING TIPS #88
=======================================
A Word of Thanks from
The Guardian Angels,
Capetown, South Africa--
"The Most Violent City In the World"
"Dear Mr Perkins, I am the Regional Director: South
Africa for the International Alliance of Guardian Angels. We are a
volunteer corps that uses martial arts skills to protect our
neighbourhoods.
In Cape Town, the most violent city in the world, I have
found most martial arts to be ineffective. Sure, it teaches discipline,
techniques, strength, speed, reflexes etc. but it is not often put into a
street context, and that was a big problem for me, as I convinced people
to leave the (relative) safety of their homes to come and patrol with me.
Therefore their safety was a huge concern.
About a year ago I purchased Attackproof [the book] and immediately
set out to adapt the system for our purposes.
Training started a few weeks later (I have only limited martial arts
experience, so I followed the book religiously) and I insisted on members
working on the drills. Every session was broken down into 3 parts, with
principles (we call them attributes) taking up one third, gang attack
drills (we call them Survival Fighting) the second third, and lastly that
training that is unique to Guardian Angels (such as patrol training etc)
taking up the last third.
All the members quickly felt more confident and
gradually I started seeing an increase in gracefull movement, with members
suddenly starting to even continue training during breaks etc. One of the
members, Nemesis (we all use code names), had never had ANY self-defence
training before. He is an incredible man of 40 who had a triple by-pass
operation in January 2007. Get this, FIVE DAYS after the op he was back on
patrol!!!
During this patrol we assisted the local police in a robbery
(involving fire-arm) arrest. A few weeks ago Nemesis went to a local pub
after work and while in there he was accosted by 5 guys who had been on
our case for months. They surrounded him and started hassling him, and in
the midst of all this the one man made the mistake of asking him "Do you
want to be shot, huh?" BAM, went Nemesis, immediately working through the
relevant drill. When number one went down the other four virtually went
into shock. This was the last thing they expected. They were five, he was
alone, and what looked like easy pickings suddenly turned out to be much
more than they expected. When this enraged Angel growled, "Well, is that
the best you can do?" They picked up their buddy and went home. If it was
not for Attackproof he may (would) have been seriously injured, and in
Cape Town you cannot afford to be unprepared. We have over 1400 murders in
this city every year, the vast majority of them with knives so our streets
are no walk in the park, unless you are out hunting (lol)!
I also just want to emphasize how excellent Attackproof is. We have never had the
benefit of seeing the DVD's, not having the required funds to purchase
them, so ALL of the training comes out of the book, which has become the
foundation on which virtually all of our self-defence training is built.
Attackproof is an excellent book and as a former police officer in Cape
Town, I know what violence looks like. We have more murders, rapes and
domestic violence than anywhere else on earth, and all the other
self-defence books were second-class. I now compare every single book to
Attackproof and have yet to see one that comes even close.
Mr Perkins, your work is a masterpiece and it is helping us to tame the streets of
this city. Directly due to your work we are able to ensure safety for
whole segments of this city and are already working on ensuring safety for
visitors in 2010 during the Football World Cup. Congratulations!"

Pressure Point Fighting: Realistic Self Defense?
One Person's Experience
"I have been reading the forum (great stuff btw) and I thought my own
personal experience might be applicable here.
A few years back I spent some time working with George Dillman and his
organization on Ryu-Kyu Kempo and pressure point fighting. This group
prides themselves on translating theories of chi / ki and ancient
martial secrets into modern day science and "martial reality" (I put
that in quotes for a reason that you will discover in the next
paragraph- keep reading).
They had essentially begun to bridge the
gap between ancient Eastern medicine and modern Western medicine.
Several studies were conducted at a university hospital somewhere in
Maryland I believe (I forget which one but it's showcased in one or
two of Dillman's book along with Dr. Terry Has ~I believe was the
doctor's name) where pressure points were applied to knock people out
while they were hooked up to various EKG's and the like. While
obviously it's not surprising to see someone get knocked out if struck
in the neck or head, seeing someone get knocked out by points on their
arms and back is quite impressive. The study was done to not only
witness the effects on the brain but to show the validity of the knock-
out.
I have personally been struck by a few of the instructors and I
can say that this stuff works. I was struck on what was identified as
a "spleen point" on the body and turned 3 shades of green (as the
instructor advised would happen). However, I say that out of one side
of my mouth-- and say it is more science than mysticism out of the
other side. It has been proven that the human body has an electro-
magnetic charge. We also know that the human body has a very
particular "circuitry" and if you interrupt that circuitry, it can
result in unconsciousness and illness...perhaps even death? Has
anyone ever gotten a massage and felt ill afterwards? Some will say
this is just the result of too many toxins being released from your
muscles into your blood stream and a lack of "flushing" your system
afterwards (you are supposed to drink a lot of water after a
massage). While that certainly happens, I believe that if your
masseur doesn't know what he/she is doing, they can screw things up
royally in your system causing more harm than good.
The point I'm making is, the human body is extremely complex and there are many ways
to manipulate it, break it down, and cause it to "short circuit". But
I digress, chi / ki power and pressure points really are very cool
stuff... BUT being a KCD student, we pride ourselves on being martial
REALISTS. So I will say and STRESS the following:
I find this stuff to be fascinating but HIGHLY IMPRACTICAL for a real,
non-choreographed, violent encounter in the street. A few years ago,
I presented my excitement for these methods to Master Perkins and he
brought up a very valid and important point. He simply brought over a
guy twice my size (Mike Watson fyi- for those of you in NY) and said,
"do you think if this man was TRYING TO KILL YOU, you'd be able to
strike his nerve points in the correct order, in the correct direction/
angle?"
John's point hit home. Real violent encounters are
unpredictable and sloppy. If you are attacked in the streets or
forced to fend for your life or that of a loved one, the chances are-
the criminal/ attacker will be larger than you and likely be wielding
a weapon of some sort. The chances of you being able to do something
so specific that requires such pin-point accuracy (hitting specific
nerve points or even nerve clusters the right way) during such an
event is about as likely as winning the lottery! As Lt Col Al says,
"when the feces hit the oscillating device, it's just gonna be what
it's gonna be!".
You can't premeditate your action, you can't setup
strikes and you can't TRY to get something off at any particular
moment in a real fight. You have to move according to how your
opponent(s) presents his/her movements to you. If it's for real, you
just have to bring the house down on them and let it go!! ...It's
going to be what it's going to be.
That being said, I haven't had a real violent fight (outside of the
--Adam C.
training environment) since I was in college. I would love to hear
some of the more seasoned fighters key in on this point with their own
experience(s)."
