The Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom Murders:
Another tragic reason why we do, what we do,

You know, just when you think you can't be shocked anymore, there comes news of another horrific crime that, unless you read it for yourself, you would not believe it happened for real.
I'm talking about the horrific murders of Ms. Channon Christian and Mr. Christopher Newsom. This is a case that has received scant media attention-- well actually it has received virtually "Zero" outside of the community that has been affected. While the case is proceeding through the legal system, based on what has been reported, here is what we know:
•- On the morning of January 7, 2007 Hugh Christopher Newsom, Jr., 23, and Channon Gail Christian, 21, a couple from Knoxville, Tennessee, were kidnapped, driven and forced into a home at gunpoint.
•- Ms. Channon Christian was then forced to watch as her boyfriend, Mr. Chris Newsom was gang raped prison style and then had his penis was cut off. He was later driven to nearby railroad tracks where he was shot and set afire.
•- Channon's hell was just beginning. She was beaten; gang raped repeatedly, had one of her breasts cut off and had bleach poured down her throat to destroy DNA evidence-all while she was still alive. To add to Channon's degradation the suspects took turns urinating on her.
•- They too set her body on fire, apparently inside the residence, but for some reason left her body there-in five separate trash bags.

Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom murder
Hugh Christopher Newsom, Jr., 23, and Channon Gail Christian, 21, were a couple from Knoxville, Tennessee. They were tortured, group raped, and murdered after being kidnapped early on the morning of January 7, 2007, while their vehicle was being carjacked.[1] Both murders have been classified as premeditated.[2]
Five suspects have been arrested and charged in the case.[3] The grand jury has indicted the 5 suspects with a total of 46 counts including torture, murder, and rape.[2]
The Crime
Christian and Newsom had gone on a date at a local restaurant on Saturday, January 6, 2007, but did not return home. During their drive, the couple was "hijacked, bound and blindfolded and taken back to Davidson's apartment."[4]
At Davidson's apartment, Newsom had apparently been group raped in Christian's presence.[4][5] According to Officer Todd Childress, "Newsom's body was wrapped in a 'sheet and/or comforter,' and that the victim had been shot at least three times. He also notes that Newsom's shoes, socks, identification, and iPod were missing. His body had been burned."[6]
Christian's parents found her Toyota 4-Runner on Chipman Street on Monday, with the help of her mobile phone provider. Because the killers ditched Christian's SUV just a few hours after it was stolen, it has been sugested that the primary objectives of the perpetrators was their desire to kidnap, torture, rape, and murder, instead of a simple hijacking.[7] An envelope recovered from the vehicle yielded fingerprint evidence that led police to Lemaricus Davidson and 2316 Chipman Street. When police went to the address on Tuesday, January 9, they found the home unoccupied and Christian's body in a trash can in the kitchen. She had been dismembered, her body found in five separate trash bags.[8] It has been alleged that for two days she had been group raped multiple times, beaten, and urinated upon.[4] Reports have also indicated that Christian was forced to drink bleach or a similar liquid, in an attempt to remove DNA evidence.[8] Newsom's body was found adjacent to railroad tracks in East Knoxville the next afternoon.[4]
Some media reports have suggested that prior to their deaths Christopher's penis was severed and one or both of Channon's breasts were cut off, however the police department refuses to comment on these specific allegations.[4]
The Victims
Christian came to Tennessee with her family from Louisiana in 1997. She was a graduate of Farragut High School and a senior sociology major at the University of Tennessee. [9][10] On January 12th her family released a statement to thank the Knoxville community "for all their prayers and everything". A candlelight vigil was held on the university campus January 25, 2007 in her honor. She is buried at Highland Memorial West Cemetery.
Newsom, a former baseball player for the Halls High School Red Devils graduated from Halls in 2002. He was interred at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens.[11]
District Attorney General Randy Nichols has not indicated whether or not he will seek the death penalty, but he does say the state will seek conviction for all charges filed in a 24-page indictment from the Knox County Grand Jury.[12]
The five suspects are:
- Eric DeWayne "E" Boyd, 34, arrested in connection with the fatal carjacking, only faces federal charges as an accessory after the fact. He was not indicted by the Knox County grand jury.
- George Geovonni "Detroit" Thomas, 27, faces a total of 46 charges. Thomas was indicted on 16 counts of felony murder growing out of rape, robbery, kidnapping, and theft of Christian and Newsom, 2 counts of premeditated murder, 2 counts of especially aggravated robbery, 4 counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, 20 counts of aggravated rape, and 2 counts of theft.
- Lemaricus Devall "Slim" Davidson, 25, (b. June 13, 1981) faces a total of 46 charges. Davidson was indicted on 16 counts of felony murder growing out of rape, robbery, kidnapping, and theft of Christian and Newsom, 2 counts of premeditated murder, 2 counts of especially aggravated robbery, 4 counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, 20 counts of aggravated rape, and 2 counts of theft. Davidson had completed serving a five-year sentence in Tennessee on a previous felony conviction for carjacking and aggravated robbery on August 5, 2006.
- Letalvis "Rome" Cobbins, 24, (b. December 20, 1982) faces a total of 46 charges. Cobbins was indicted on 16 counts of felony murder growing out of rape, robbery, kidnapping, and theft of Christian and Newsom, 2 counts of premeditated murder, 2 counts of especially aggravated robbery, 4 counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, 20 counts of aggravated rape, and 2 counts of theft. In 2003, Cobbins was convicted of third-degree attempted robbery in New York state. He and Davidson are brothers.
- Vanessa Coleman, 18, was arrested by police in Lebanon, Kentucky. She faces 40 Tennessee state charges. Coleman was indicted on 12 counts of felony murder growing out of rape, robbery, kidnapping, and theft of Christian and Newsom, 1 count of premeditated murder (of Christian only), 1 count of especially aggravated robbery (of Newsom only), 4 counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, 20 counts of aggravated rape, and 2 counts of theft.
The four suspects indicted in Knox County are scheduled for a status hearing on May 17.[13]

While we do not have all of the facts as of yet as you can see this crime is more heinous than words can describe. One can't even begin to imagine the horror these young lives endured at the hands of these animals nor the anguish their families had to endure upon hearing the news. It would be easy to second guess what these two should have done in this situation but to do so would only victimize them again. I will only offer one comment on the only realistic choice they had.None the less such inhumanity at least in my view seems to be becoming the norm. It is this level of savagery which is the very reason why we teach the skills and principles that we do. It is also the reason as to why we do not teach sport fighting and cools esoteric moves as a form of self defense. If your training does not take the possibility of this type of violence into consideration in which you train toward realistic solutions to deal with it, you're only kidding yourself, and you are a homicide or rape victim waiting to happen.
Too many martial artists measure themselves against how either "they" stack up to other martial artists or how their art stacks up against other arts rather than worrying about being able to protect themselves from the type of violence as stated above that actually happens in the real world. This is why we focus on "Homicide Prevention" training. Your adversary is not the talented competition fighter, or gifted forms competitor but the homicidal maniac, the prison trained monster or psychosexual killer.
The truth is that most martial artists are the least likely people you would run into on the street looking to do you harm. Yet martial artists still feel the need to prove themselves like their favorite martial arts hero's from the movies, however, this has absolutely nothing to do with the brutal reality of a real attack on your life. The speed, chaos and ferocity are too much to deal with except for the most physically gifted of us. And even if you are that physically gifted can you pull it off against multiple attackers going for the jugular?
When the fight goes down you are on your own, and neither your sensei, your fellow students or the cops will probably be there to help you, and if you can't "bring it" you're in serious trouble. All of this business about what a famous fighter of this system or that famous fighter can do and on and on is all nonsense. The fact remains that you had better be worried about what "you" can do.
This is why I always try to impress upon our students that the only thing that matters is when you walk out of our class whether or not "you" can deliver the goods on an attacker and protect your life. Until you touch swords all other arguments, boastings and what have you is all BS. This is not to trivialize the importance of what we teach but to reinforce the fact that the only fight that matters is the one you're in when your life is on the line.
This is why even the creator of Guided Chaos along with the instructors and most of our students are always armed either with a gun or some other type of weapon. And more importantly it is why we train to use them not for sport but to take people out.
Also to be fair even if you had a gun in this situation, the question remains can you get to it in time? Can you turn and wield it effectively while in the car? Can you shoot well enough to hit what you aim at? Can you shoot while being shot at? And most important of all have you trained to do it?
Even in the military in combat from an armored vehicle with a stabilized mounted machine gun where the gunner has near 180º degree field of view it is difficult at best. The point being even a gun is not a panacea.
No matter what they did once the bad guys got the drop on them they were left with lousy choices. No cool moves, punches, kicks or fancy locks could have gotten these young people out of this situation and anything less than speeding off forcing these animals to either shoot them through the vehicle or get run over in the process would have sufficed. While such techniques are never discussed in most martial arts schools such as evasive / offensive driving skills along with the basic awareness training we teach is every bit as important if not more so than any striking technique or skill.
This slavish almost religious devotion to colorful, sportive, mystical arts which have no basis in the reality of combat in the real world perpetrated onto people under the guise of self defense has got to stop! This is nothing more than the blind leading the blind, the rotten fruit from the same sick tree, and no matter how often their stuff fails on the street rather than examining the merits of what they are learning like the dog who returns to lick his own vomit, if they survive they return yet again, blaming themselves, "...if I were only better at my kicks, punches, holds etc...", rather than their bogus systems. Just as a race car driver can't drive with a flat tire, or a great musician play with a broken instrument neither can you make work that which is unworkable.
These are just my thoughts but I felt compelled to comment on this. If what I have said angers you, offends you or even scares you then good. But like the doctor that has to deliver dire news I owe people nothing but the blunt honest truth and if it causes you to do some serious soul searching and rethink your training and why you do a martial art in the first place. If it causes you to begin training with a more realistic approach to fighting and awakens you out of your stupor then I've done my job. The rest is up to you.
Nothing will bring these two poor souls back and having experienced a similar tragedy in my own family my prayers are with their families and their loved ones.
Let this be a lesson to us all...
