QUESTION ON HOSTILE AWARENESS DRILL:
I'm about 5'5''. I was practicing the Hostile Awareness drill
when walking in a mall and sizing people up with potential attacks and how I
would respond. If confronted with an attacker that's 6'4'', how would Guided
Chaos deal with this and how to apply dropping energy?
ANSWER:
1) Use your awareness: Don't let it happen in the first place. Maintain your
Personal Comfort Zone (a 4-5 foot circle around you that no stranger is
allowed to enter without permission). Practice the casual Jack Benny
"ready" stance (a non-threatening posture that nevertheless puts you
in a position to both defend against a front or rear attack while readying your
pre-emptive or counter-attack.)
2) You're in a public place: scream "fire!"
3) Run.
4) If NONE of the above is possible, attack the attacker: Low shin kick
(hopefully with steel-toed shoes) followed by eye gouges or throat
strikes.
Dropping energy is applied to all strikes. Once initial contact is made,
we cannot give you a "blow-by-blow" plan for fighting. That is the
strategic error of most styles and it's not how violence works in the real
world. GC training will help you to flow and adapt to whatever changes
happen (and remember that change is the RULE, not the exception). The more
you train, the better you can adapt.
QUESTION ON DROPPING:
In reference to the dropping drills - -are there any signs - feelings -
I should be aware of that will let me know I am on the right track ?
ANSWER:
The best indication that you are dropping correctly comes from the
"Ball Compression" drill in our book and Part 1 DVD. If you follow
those guidelines explicitly you should be on the right track.
This basically involves relaxation, instantaneous explosion (tension),
followed by relaxation. The tension lasts a microsecond. If you do it right,
the reflection back into your shoulder will feel like a jackhammer.
BALL COMPRESSION DRILL

This develops the no-inch punch from extremely close range, where most fighting ends
up. The beauty of these strikes is that they require no chambering or pulling back of any
kind. This drill develops body unity, balance, focus, relaxation, and most important,
full-power dropping.
1. Take an old tennis ball and find a fat tree trunk or telephone pole.
2. Select any tool, for example, a palm strike, and place the ball in your hand against the
tree.
3. Orient your body using the principles of body unity into some rather strangely angled
strike, such as might occur in a melee. You could even stand on one leg.
4. Hold the configuration, breathe deep into your belly, and relax your entire body—
muscles, joints, and mind—while palming the ball against the tree as lightly as possible.
5. Now, as if you sneezed or coughed from the soles of your feet through all the joints of
your body and out your hand, drop so the tennis ball is instantaneously and explosively
compressed.
6. change the angle and location of the strike and repeat.
7. Then change the tool (the palm is the easiest; chops are a lot harder). Try using your
fist, elbow, shoulder, knee, and foot.
Remember to be relaxed, balanced, and sensitive when you practice this drill. If you
are not completely relaxed, you will have no power. Muscle tension will have you fighting
your own body’s mass. Even if you are unusually strong, you will not compress the ball
as much as when you drop correctly. If you aren’t completely balanced, you will actually
blast yourself away from the tree. If you aren’t completely sensitive, the ball will shoot
out of your hand due to the tree’s curved surface. If you aren’t properly aligned, your
power will be nil.
If you practice this drill five minutes a day, you will increase the availability and
effectiveness of your dropping strikes. When you do use dropping strikes against an
opponent, the shock waves will reverberate inside the assailant without actually moving him.
Because of splashing energy, they cause internal damage from their concussive force. This
is effective when you’re grappling with a larger opponent, especially when your strikes
are slipped inside the opponent’s arms and are directed against the five vital zones: eyes,
throat, spine, groin, and kidneys.
