GUIDED CHAOS NEWS #136:
GETTING INVOLVED: YES OR NO
By Brad Steiner, President International Combat Martial Arts Federation
[From an email to Brad]
"Could you please instruct me on the following so that I can practice mentally and physically in case I encounter this situation?
A Friend of mine just recently came across two bike gang members the (Finks) belting up and innocent person, my friend walked over and said putting his hand up, that is enough.
They turned on him punching him in the face, and kicking him while he was down.
There were two other gang members in the waiting. Security done nothing.
He suffered a broken eye socket.
I’m well aware he was in a hotel late at night, and should have not put himself in this situation, but we may all encounter this in a street or park or wherever.
The person he went to help was unharmed, and ran off."
ANSWER:
"There are two aspects to this problem. One may be addressed very clearly and simply: "How does one intervene on behalf of a victim, and assist in that victim's defense?" The other aspect — which may not be addressed so clearly — involves the twofold problem of: a) The wisdom and desirability of intervening, coupled with b) the legalities of intervention.
IF we assume (and I am assuming this to make an academic point only, not to offer advice to necessarily undertake such action) that intervention is determined to be the course that we will choose, then the way to do it is to attack mercilessly and by surprise, completely neutralizing one of the two predators with a vicious blow to a dangerously vital point (neck, throat, testicles, eyes, knee, etc.) using all of the force that one is capable of. The idea is to render this creature totally unable to offer any possible threat for at least the seconds necessary to cripple the SECOND predator — which must be done without hesitation after dropping the first, and with a similar disregard for mercy or any tremor of restraint.
More than a single adversary is a life-threatening situation every time. You don't give two or more proven predators the warning they need to attack you effectively, and perhaps kill you!
As for the LEGAL aspects of this thing . . .
My personal (not "legal", since I am not a lawyer) advice in this regard is never to become involved physically and personally unless you KNOW THE WHOLE STORY. In other words, before coming to the aid of another, ARE YOU POSITIVE that you are not interfering with law enforcement officers who (although their appearance may seem to suggest that they are the troublemakers — perhaps because they are undercover) are actually the good guys? Are you positive that the "victim" will not turn on you because of the nature of the relationship with his or her "attacker"? (This last happens all the time in cases of violence between boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife, etc.). Can you be sure that the person you defend will not run away, leaving you to confront law enforcement alone, and leaving you to be perceived by the police (thanks to the predator's inevitable lies) as the initiator of trouble, and thus obliged to defend yourself in the eyes of the law?
I would NEVER automatically go to the aid of a stranger. I would unhesitantly go to the aid of a police officer (assuming that it was clear to me that the individual was in fact a police officer); I would go to the aid of a child being hurt; I would go to the aid of an elderly or handicapped person being attacked by a younger individual; and of course (and obviously) I would go to the aid of a person I knew and cared for. Otherwise, with circumstances being so legally sensitive and unfair today, I would call the police and let them handle the matter. Good samaritanship can get you into serious trouble criminally AND civilly today. At least that is the case here in the United States.
The recent atrocity that occurred in California, where a group of predators attacked, gang raped, and left a 15 year old girl unconscious following the attack, is one example of where going to the aid of a victim CERTAINLY WOULD BE INDICATED, in my opinion, providing one had the ability to render such aid. The 15 onlookers, according to the news report, who did nothing at all (not even calling the police) acted disgracefully. I would certainly say that physically attacking those rapists with lethal force would have been 100% justified (but, honestly, I could envision anyone who had done so quite possibly being brought up on charges if he killed any or all of the attackers). It just seems that one would "have to" go to that poor girl's aid — just because one is human and one could not tolerate witnessing such a violation of a human being.
I hope that my reply to your (excellent) question has been helpful."
