CELENTE SURVIVES CHILE EARTHQUAKE:
NEO-SURVIVALISM TREND IN ACTION

If you are having trouble reading this email, you may view the online version

KINGSTON, NY, 4 MARCH 2010 — Among the Top Trends we had forecast for 2010 was “Neo-Survivalism.”
With so many once-dependable “Systems” taking a battering and breaking down – and with the certainty that there will never be a return to “normal” – The Trends Research Institute foresaw the need for new types of survivalist thinking designed to cope with future emergencies.

Our Winter 2010 Trends Journal
® provided practical guidelines and escape strategies applicable to a gamut of crises from economic meltdowns to terrorist attacks. (See Top Trends: Breaking Point 2010. “Neo-Survivalism” Click here.)  The 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Chile on February 27th put those theoretical guidelines and strategies to an acid test.

Institute Director Gerald Celente and colleague Gary Abatelli, on the last leg of a South American fact-finding mission, arrived in Santiago, Chile on Thursday, February 25th.  Shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, though in a 14th floor room with all windows closed, they were awakened by the wild howling of the innumerable dogs that roam Santiago’s streets.  In retrospect, it was a wake-up-call … a harbinger of the mega-quake that would strike minutes later.  The 5-star Crown Plaza Hotel lurched and rocked.  Within the room the TV toppled, lamps crashed, drawers shot out of their bureaus.

Both close-combat black belts, Celente and Abatelli’s decades of physical and psychological training would serve them well.   Aware of Chile’s long history of quakes, at the first tremor, Celente bolted from bed, put on his pants, slipped on his shoes, grabbed his jacket and ran for the stairwell.   The two had just one thought in mind:  get out of the hotel before it collapsed.  Nothing else counted.  Personal possessions (passports, wallets, money, watches) became instant non-essentials.  When it comes to life and death, the only things to leave behind are everything.

During 90 seconds of violent quakes, they put into practice years of “wobble board” training: the art of maintaining balance while continuing to move forward no matter what is being thrown at you.  Flying down 14 stories of convulsing, pitching stairs, in just minutes (Celente reckons no more than three), they were first to reach the bottom.

Astonishingly, except for the hysterical cries of Madre de Dios coming from an escapee from a few floors above them, the stairwell was totally empty!  They would later learn, from interviews with hotel guests, that the majority froze in panic.  Some called the front desk for instructions, others waited for tour guides to direct them, a few huddled under desks, found refuge in bathtubs, or sought shelter in doorways.

Trend Institute lesson #1: We put our motto, “Think for yourself,” into action.  Luckily, though seriously damaged, the hotel stood.  Had it collapsed, those within it who were waiting to follow orders from tour guides or hotel personnel would have perished.  When survival is at stake – physical, fiscal or psychological – the only leader to follow is yourself.

Trend Institute lesson #2:  Prepare for the worst.  If the worst doesn’t happen, nothing is lost.  But if the worst happens and no preparations have been made … everything is lost.

The life-threatening element of the quake was past, but not the threat to life.
In the few minutes it took Celente and Abatelli to make it downstairs, out into the street and back to the hotel lobby entrance, wolf-packs of screaming young men materialized, seemingly out of nowhere, even though it was 4 AM.  Rampaging through the streets, they bowled over and mugged anyone unlucky enough to get in their path.  Police were nowhere to be seen.

Out of harm’s way for the moment, the next priority for Celente and Abatelli was finding a way out of Chile.  The devastation was vast and the airport shut down.  It was obvious that any sort of cleanup, to say nothing of repair and a restoration of services, would be slow to come.

Phase two of the Neo Survival Guide, as outlined in the Trends Journal®, now came into play:  “Communal spirit intelligently deployed is the core value of 'Neo-Survivalism.'”

Abatelli’s laptop was working and an email was fired off to John Perkins, their Attackproof.com close-combat mentor back in NY.  Immediately, Perkins sent out an SOS to his worldwide list of martial arts practitioners.  Within hours, advice was streaming in through a far-flung web of primary … then secondary and tertiary sources.

There were names and phone numbers of high-level Embassy officials; personal contacts in Chile and Argentina ready to help with funds and lodging.  Access to the AttackProof.com network assured them that they would not have to weather the crisis alone.   Among the dozens of suggestions, one held the promise of immediate escape:  hire a car and driver to take them to Mendoza, Argentina, a ten hour drive from Santiago.  From there they could fly to Buenos Aires and in fact were actually able – despite other unforeseen complications – to catch their scheduled flight back to New York.

Trendpost: The “Neo-Survivalism” principles carefully developed by The Trends Research Institute had been put into action and passed a crucial test.  While the odds of being caught up in another major earthquake may be remote, analogous crises are not only possible, but probable in the near future.

We foresaw “Neo Survivalism” as a Top Trend for 2010, because in these critical times a range of socioeconomic calamities and geopolitical upheavals will require individual and collective responses beyond any government’s ability to address.  Terror attacks, economic meltdowns, crime waves, food shortages, infrastructure-disrupting cyber attacks, extended power outages and wars are all possibilities that the “on-trend” should be preparing for.

A WEEK, ONE DAY IN CHILE
   by Gary Abatelli

I would like to thank all the wonderful people who helped in this situation. I'm proud to be part of such a caring and resourceful group. A special thanks to Bill Tkacs, Kevin Harrell, and of cause the driving force behind this rescue, Grand Master John Perkins.

"A friend of mine, Gerald Celente, Director of the Trends Research Institute, asked me to accompany him on a fact-finding mission to Uruguay, South America.  We were to visit a place called Punta Del Este, and I was to take pictures.

After a few days he had the information he needed for the institute, so we decided to leave the country and see more of South America.  We chose to go to Santiago, Chile  --  and without a doubt, we had the experience of a lifetime, one (and I speak for Gerald too), that we never want to repeat.

February 27, 3:15 am. We both woke up hearing dogs barking, commenting that it was very strange.  Then like a button being pushed for a special effect in a movie, we were thrown violently from our beds, and the race for survival was on. The sound was of a distant freight train, lamps, drawers, shelves, tv, plaster and everything else crashing to the floor. We were on the 14th floor of The Crown Plaza Hotel when the earth turned into water.  We knew we were in serious trouble, we were in an earthquake.

Acting immediately, our communication was short and sharp, putting our pants and shoes on while running down the hall, emergency lights flashing.  We ran down a swaying staircase at warp speed, and I experienced an unreal dream-like state:  I could see my untied shoelaces in slow motion, was making sure I didn't step on them and trip, the hand rails were moving from side to side, and all this was accompanied by an eerie sound of a woman coming down the stairs above us crying and praying out loud in spanish.

Although there was never a thought of giving up, there was still the thought of expecting the floors above to come crumbling down, that this could be the end. Then somewhere around the 3rd floor, the staircase went outside to a landing covered in glass and pieces of cement, yet with no apparent direction down.  Gerald and I went into search mode. There was just enough moonlight to find the exit, and a way down to the street. With distant sounds of glass and cement hitting the ground, we were out of the building from the 14th floor and on the street in about 3 minutes, well ahead of the other guests.

We were 300 miles from the epicenter of 8.8, but still a respectable 6.8 in the city of Santiago. While waiting for the countless tremors to end and staying away from buildings due to falling debris, the next problem was groups of 10 to 20 opportunistic criminals running at full speed, robbing people at random on the streets. I was fortunate to have Gerald with me, he also is a practitioner of the fighting arts and very accomplished in his own right. Because we both took preemptive action, we had no encounters, however with out a doubt we were two of the toughest cats on the block, ready to do what ever was necessary to survive.

Street lights out, there wasn’t a police officer in sight (they most likely went to save their own families). By no means did we feel overly confident  --  a band of wild criminals wilding at full speed is a formative force, to say the least.  It was like the running of the bulls (something to be avoided, not stopped). Our training over the years kept us both alert and in control of the adrenaline racing through our veins, yet many other people were not so lucky.  Our survival weapon of choice were rocks laying all over street...

After the initial quake and after-shocks settled down to tremors, our hotel (which for the record had no victims) and the staff handed out water and robes to people huddled in the lobby.  My friend Gerald had grabbed his Armani jacket on the way out, so he undoubtedly was the best dressed of all the survivors.  So there we were, happily alive, somewhat relieved, all airports closed, phone lines down, state of emergency declared, no sleep, and depressing for me, no camera. What next?

The first half of the day was spent mostly exchanging stories with the other guests in the hotel lobby.  The rest of the hotel was off  limits until an engineer could check the extent of the damage;  our hotel did not collapse, but the structure was severely damaged, uneven floors and cracks throughout.

After several hours, the hotel personal got one of the computers to work and they connected to the internet. After waiting on line we sent emails off to all who knew we were in Chile, One of the first emails went to my friend and teacher Grand Master John Perkins, who heads the combat school I'm part of. I could not say enough about this man, some of you reading are aware of who he is, and for those who do not, I will say: " If your fortunate in life you will meet a teacher with the power to alter your direction." I'm so blessed to have John as a teacher, and proud to call him my friend. Besides reminding us of survival techniques he has told us countless time, he sent our email to a vast web of martial artist all over the world. After sifting through the replies, he told us to get anyway we could, to a place called Mendoza in Argentina. The info came from a man named Bill Tkacs, to whom we are quite grateful.

So we went about finding someone with a reliable car that would drive us through the Andes Mountains (12 hours we were told to our destination).  A man that worked at the hotel had a friend with a car and we settled on $600 and we were off.  We drove on the major highway interrupted occasionally by a fallen bridge or rock slide (I must note that the Andes are absolutely breathtaking, and after what we were through they became a beautiful movie).

We crossed the border into Argentina and got to Mendoza after a very long drive.  It was so nice to see glass and cement in the shape of a building.  A nights rest, a flight to the city of Cordoba, another flight to Buenos Aries, and back to New York. Home semi-sweet home. I can honestly say: "I spent a week one-day in Chile."
In closing I Would also like to say: "Appreciate what you have, and smile."

Notes for Survival Practitioners :

To preface, all the balancing work I've done with John Perkins over many years i.e... wobble boards, vacuum walk, ninja walk  etc... saved my life, fellow practitioners take note!

First let me say, ’Words could never describe the reality of an all out  survival situation,’ whether it be a close combat fight for your life, or surviving a natural disaster. A practitioner of survival must be ready for the worst. Escape is the only goal.

And during the earthquake it was all out survival  --  in this case, run for the hills, every-man for himself, grabbing shoes, if you can.  These are the only thoughts one needs in an earthquake, as bare feet are easily bruised and cut, slowing you down in the long run. (I hopped for a while in the hall to get mine on, but had no time to tie them).

Some of the people called the front desk to find out what to do, while confused others sat in their bathtubs (which is what you’re supposed to do in a tornado, but not an earthquake)!  They made bad choices and were unprepared, yet got lucky.

If you’re in an earthquake area, know what to do:  is your building earthquake resistant? is this a flood area, dry area fire , or hurricane ally?  Don't be a victim, be aware of the environment!  Be preemptive!

It may sound callous to some, but in this particular survival situation (while switched on to ‘automatic’), what was most important to me was, ME!  Second was my life-long friend Gerald Celente (and if I could save someone else along the way, fine)!  But neither one of us in any way was going ‘room to room.’ I mention that only to remind the reader that in an all-out survival situation, you are totally on your own!

When we hit the streets it took only about 2 seconds before absolute chaos broke out. I can’t stress enough how fast HELL can appear.  The situation was immediately apparent  --  do anything to stay alive.  We took defensive positions and worked as a team, making sure we were constantly on the same page.  Covered each other’s backs, we used 360° vision, and were always aware of our positions versus the malay around.  We communicated with sharp short sentences, covered each other's backs.

We were highly aware of the weapons available to us (cement rocks, pieces of metal). These were the same tools that the deranged/wild gangs were carrying.  We stayed close, and the thought of running across the street to save someone getting robbed was never an issue:  It was WAY too dangerous, and unfortunately, we had to accept that.

We came up with an agreed upon escape route, and meeting place. At first we stayed by the hotel’s thick eight-foot high metal entrance gate, away from the building. This way if anything fell from above we had protection.  Our metal gate could also be closed, so we could get behind it if necessary, to separate ourselves from the chaotic streets.

After the sun came up they opened the hotel lobby, which was declared safe, and everyone filed in for water and a place to sit or lie down.  We made sure there was nothing to obstruct our path/exit out of the premises (in case of more after shocks), and even sweet-talked a group of old ladies to re-adjust their chairs, just to clear a path.

Finally, we had a chance to rest/cat nap, but never at the same time  --  one of us was always on guard.  We drank plenty of water, but there wasn’t much need for food, as we had something better (a sustained flow of adrenaline). The human organism is quite amazing:  adrenaline is not only an explosive energy surge during fight or flight, but the adrenals can (involuntarily) turn into a slow drip for a long period of time.

In closing I would like to say to all practitioners, "The drills outlined in Master Perkins manuals are more important then many realize, take them seriously."

 TEN SELF DEFENSE TIPS:
with additional Commentary by John Perkins and Prof. Bradley Steiner

These 10 tips have been circulated for quite some time now. Guided Chaos Grandmaster John Perkins and Prof. Bradley Steiner have added to the original tips. This is a small list of things to be aware of but it should serve as a start for some folks who have not studied the topic.

If it can help you or a loved one, pass it on.

Remember: use this advice only to save your life or the life of innocents and loved ones.

Because of recent abductions In daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things to do in an emergency situation... This is for you, and for you to share with your wife, your children,  everyone you know.  After reading these 10 crucial tips , forward them to someone you care about. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.

John Perkins: I believe that carrying a strong ball point pen or a pen made especially for self defense which can be found on the internet is a good basic weapon to have if you are unable to carry a handgun for defense. The pen can be carried in your hand ready for use without needing to conceal it like a handgun. If grabbed from behind you can stab the pen into the attacker's groin or if he grabs you around the neck to drag you down or away just dig the pen with both hands into his arm at the inner elbow joint and pull downward. This gives you leverage to remove the attacking arm and once the grip is loosened you can continue to attack savagely to soft body targets like the eyes, throat, armpits, navel area. If the pen is built for self defense like the Smith and Wesson pen you can penetrate the skull if you have a strong arm and grip. Don't forget the kidneys and liver as they are good secondary targets. If a bear hug is applied from behind just stab the hands of the attacker. If it comes from the front and your arms are pinned to your sides start working the point of the combat pen into the side of the attacker's body after head butting him in the nose if the nose smash doesn't work. If you can reach as far as the ribcage just dig deeply between the ribs. There are many ways a pen/spike can be used as a weapon of last resort. It can also allow you to access your handgun if attacked suddenly as long as the pen/spike is in your hand.

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do : The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!

Brad Steiner: While this is a good point, it may not be the best tip for someone unskilled in karate. It does take a bit of dexterity and training before the elbow, per se, may be employed reliably as a weapon — especially by a woman in normal attire, against a large, strong male. I would recommend driving open and extended fingers-to-eyes, or using a chinjab followed by raising the elbow of the striking arm and then eye-gouging. BITING, if grabbed hold of, and kicking like crazy, is also good. Just opening the hand and whipping a surprise handaxe to the throat is also good. Head butting is effective. I would prefer these methods because, for the complete novice, they are more likely to be delivered with sufficient force and effectiveness to facilitate escape.

2. Learned this from a tourist guide. If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you....  Chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

Brad Steiner: Excellent general advice! Additionally, keeping a “throw away wallet” that is stuffed with junk or play money, etc. but that seems authentic, can be utilized with this ploy. While avoidance and escape is the best tactic, when possible, there may be contexts in which an appropriately prepared individual can feign compliance, reach for a handgun (or even a knife) under the guise of reaching for a wallet, and then . . . well, you can figure it out.

[Editor's Note: There may be some risk however if you're dealing with an angry psycho. It is possible that by throwing the wallet, he may just blow you away...and then casually retrieve the wallet. That being said, if he is that species of beast, he may have shot you no matter how compliant you were. All the more reason to never go with the attacker to crime scene #2 and to attack the attacker.]

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail lights, stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy.. The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

Brad Steiner: With modern vehicles it is possible to extricate oneself from inside the trunk of a car if you keep a cool head. HOWEVER: the smart tactic is never to permit oneself to be locked inside a vehicle trunk in the first place. Pretending to comply, then suddenly knocking any weapon aside and attacking the abductor’s eyes/throat and then running, is — I think — a better tactic that offers a greater chance of survival, on balance. Obviously the abductor does not wish to kill the person whom he orders into the vehicle’s trunk, right away. I have always been a powerful advocate of NEVER permitting oneself to be taken from a primary crime scene, if humanly possible to offer resistance. Like escape-and-evasion in military contexts, THE SOONER AND FASTER ESCAPE IS UNDERTAKEN, THE BETTER! The escape from a vehicle trunk is good counsel, nonetheless, should one find oneself thus trapped, for whatever reason).

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, making a list, etc.) DON'T DO THIS! A predator may be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR , LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, Repeat: DO NOT DRIVE OFF! Instead, gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.

(Steiner’s comment: Good advice. Also: Always lock your vehicle and secure it when getting gas and entering the office to pay for the gas. Criminals have been known to enter vehicles and lie in wait, in the back, for the woman to come back to her vehicle and drive away. THEN, they overtake their victim who is helpless. Also: KEEP YOUR GAS TANK FULL. Never stop at stations where there are odd individuals standing, or at stations in questionable neighborhoods. Do not fill your gas tank at night. Keep your vehicle well supplied — go to brightly lit gas stations in good areas, and in broad daylight. Note: I am not 100% sure of the “drive into something” advice with a gun to your head. One does not wish to cause the weapon to go off due to the criminal’s being shocked, or simply reflexively firing as the vehicle purches. On the other hand, I can see how this tactic could save a life.)

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:

a.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor , and in the back seat.

b.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.

c.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle, and the passenger side... If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

(Steiner’s comment: THIS IS PERFECT ADVICE! WE HAVE BEEN TELLING THIS TO STUDENTS FOR DECADES! FOLLOW IT!)

6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. (This is especially true at NIGHT!)

(Steiner’s comment: This might be construed in the opposite, as well. Elevators can be risky. Personally, we have heard of more attacks inside elevators than we have heard of attacks in stairways. However, there is validity to the point made. We urge serious caution at all times, and being prepared to fight back ferociously and using the element of surprise — always with a WEAPON, if this can be done lawfully.)

7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ.  RUN, preferably in a zig-zag pattern!

(Steiner’s comment: GREAT ADVICE! Again, we have urged this for decades as a good tactic, and we see no reason to change the counsel. In fact, it is NOT likely that an armed criminal will in fact fire att you at all. He obviously did not wish to fire when he had you at gun point; and he can see that raising an alarm by firing when you run away will only attract attention to himself with little chance of hitting you.)

8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked 'for help' into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

(Steiner’s comment: RIGHT! Again, we have been urging this for many, many years, and it is good advice!)

9. Another Safety Point: Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird.. The police told her 'Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door....' The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, 'We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.' He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night.

(Steiner’s comment: VERY, VERY VALUABLE AND IMPORTANT ADVICE!!!!)

10. Water scam! If you wake up in the middle of the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a burst pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all your outside faucets full blast so that you will go out to investigate and then attack. This was mentioned on America's Most Wanted when they profiled the serial killer in Louisiana.

(Steiner’s comment: Again — very, very valuable advice!)

Pass this on, stay alert, keep safe, and look out for your neighbors!u
