Subject: You can do it

Over the past few days, I’ve watched as music studio owners have adjusted to the most disruptive event that we have experienced in our lifetimes.

Thousands and thousands of studios… including group lesson studios... have made the jump to online lessons. This has happened in less than 7 days.

This is an incredible pivot for a studio owner to make.

All brought on because of an external event over which they had no control.

Here’s what I’ve noticed.

I’m not seeing or hearing the normal excuses that people make for not making radical, rapid changes.

Allow me to explain...

I’ve had people write to me over the years, asking if they have “tips” for starting online lessons. They tell me they are “considering” the idea. But, when I’ve followed up… sometimes even years later… they still are “considering” it.

I’ve had coaching clients toy with the idea, but decide not to because “they don’t know if it will work.”

For years, I’ve seen people make excuse after excuse: they’re afraid it won’t work, they’re afraid parents will reject it, they feel intimidated by the technology.

But now?

Suddenly, all of those reasons and fears and stories that studio owners invented in their own thinking…

Well, suddenly, all of those are gone now.

A month ago, thousands of studio owners who “didn’t have time to learn online lessons”... or “weren’t sure what equipment to buy”... suddenly, they have the time now. Suddenly, none of those things matter.

What changed?

They don’t have the choice anymore. It is no longer an option.

Their motivation level went way way up… and made the stories and excuses and fears go away.

The Choices We Make

What if the choice you know that you need to make wasn’t optional? What if the choice was made for you?

What would happen if you had to get creative and do it fast?

What would happen if you had to come up with a solution?

What if you no longer had an excuse or you couldn’t indulge in your own story about how:
  • parents would reject auto-payments
  • parents won’t accept group lessons
  • you don’t have time to do ads for your studio
  • parents won’t accept online lessons
  • you can’t afford to invest in your studio
  • you don’t know where to begin with marketing your studio
  • parents don’t support you at home with the children
  • you don’t have time to… (fill in the blank)
What if you no longer had a choice to stop yourself from making bold moves in any of those areas?

So many of the problems that we experience in business are a result simply because we stop ourselves.

I’m looking at myself here, too.

Remember

I want you to remember this month, this situation for the rest of your life. I want to remember how our entire industry rose to the challenge because our survival was on the line.

How YOU rose to the challenge.

I want you to remember how resourceful, creative, and motivated we all got… because we had no choice.

And - after this has passed, and life has returned to normal…

I want you to remember that you can move this fast and decisively and boldly then, too.

You are powerful.

You can do it.

Stay healthy, stay happy.

With compassion,
Daniel

I will be sending emails this week with thoughts about studio business and how we can respond in a rational, responsible way to this situation.
