Subject: When to fire a student

4 signs that you need to let go of students in your school

When should you let go of a student?

Here are 4 reasons to part ways with a student:

1. Pay

You took this student on at a previous time in your career. Your skills and reputation are now mismatched with the rate this student is paying.

If the rate raise is significant enough, it could result in losing the student.

2. Reputation.

It’s hard to say this… but you might need to let a student go for reputational reasons.

If a student is ignoring your instruction or not practicing… it could reflect poorly on your school.

You might need to have a gentle (or hard) conversation with the parent to attempt to save the student.

If these efforts don’t work, it might be time to let them go.

3. Happiness.

Similarly, if you find that many of the students you or your team work with are causing career satisfaction issues, it might be time to let them go.

Personally, I had to do this in my own teaching practice.

As I improved as a teacher, I saw that new students were progressing at a much faster rate than students who had been with me for a few years. The newer students practiced more. They were happier and more motivated.

No matter what I tried… the “legacy” students just didn’t respond to the new, better me.

I didn’t directly “fire” the students… but I did manage them out.

4. Skill.

At a certain point in my career, I got tired of seeing the endless parade of beginners. I wanted to work with more advanced students. More serious students.

As a result, I began seeing beginners in groups only.

This did cause some turnover.

There are some teachers who have no desire to teach groups or want to teach advanced students only.

If this is the case, you can manage these students out, not invite them back at the beginning of a new semester, or just let them go with a recommendation to another teacher.

Was this helpful?

Are there other reasons you have fired a student or let them go?

Let me know!

Very best,

Daniel
