I wanted to take a moment here during our “group lessons” month to shine a spotlight on a really important topic…

A simple question.

Have you ever felt a little out of your depth when teaching special needs piano students?

Perhaps they are students with learning disorders, behavioural issues, physical or intellectual disabilities or ADD.

I know I did. I personally worked with a special needs student for 7 years in my own studio… the child of a family friend. This young girl wanted to learn music but had real challenges.

I took a whole different approach with this student.

Special needs music teaching requires patience, flexibility, creativity and lots of love, care and attention.

And as teachers, it is our job to get to know each student on an individual basis and assess their needs. We can set ourselves up for success by learning:
