Subject: New Student Nightmare

Last week (and earlier this week), I asked for your questions about group lessons.

I received a terrific question about new students.

“Here’s an important question I’d like your training to address: how would group lessons accommodate the introduction every week of 1 or 2 complete beginners age 5-6? That’s not enough for their own group, and it would seem problematic to include them in a group that’s already been playing for several months.”

Basically… how do you deal with new students? And, will it be a nightmare to add a complete beginner to a pre-existing group?

I love this question!

Since 2008 my advice has been to add new students (beginners aged 4-18) to pre-existing groups.

It's not a hassle. It's not an afterthought... It's one of the main reasons why my group lessons program allowed me so much flexibility in scheduling.

It was also a secret to success when it came to getting results with my students.

Here’s why!

To make my multi-level groups work… I had to teach young students two very critical skills in their first few months.

1. I had to teach them to be independent. This is a learnable skill… even for kids as young as 5 years old. Through repetition and my teaching style, I helped kids learn how to be more resilient and “stick to it.”

2. I had to teach them to sight read notes and rhythm. This was something that they learned to do in their first few weeks in my studio. With very very few exceptions, I have kids sight-reading notes and rhythm within 2 lessons in my studio (I talk about this more in depth in this video).

Here's the thing...

I thought about working with these new students as an investment of time.

I needed to spend a little bit more time with a new student… so that they needed me less long-term.

Thus - I would have older students in the upper levels of their method book learn songs pretty much on their own.

So - I tried to have a mix of newer and more experienced students… simply because the 2nd and 3rd year students weren’t constantly pestering me with questions or struggling to learn their music, playing unevenly, etc.

Later this month, I’m going to be teaching how to get these results out of students… and how to do it in the context of the group!
