In today’s video, I’m going to share with you a coaching session that I had with an amazing studio owner: Steph Warden.

Steph is a grad student in Portland, Oregon. She already has several teachers working for her. She is balancing the demands of student life, professional life, and studio management.

In the midst of this, Steph felt frustrated with a common problem that studio owners have. Her question boiled down to:
How Do I Keep Families From Quitting Music Lessons?
In this interview, I go in depth on this topic - giving ideas that I’ve never before shared on any blog post or video.

I also coached her on these ideas and topics:
  • Steph’s background and the evolution of her studio (skip to 1 min: 47 sec)
  • The big question that prompted this entire interview (skip to 3:50)
  • The struggle with parents that just want piano lessons to be “fun” and let their kids quit when it’s not… and how to solve this struggle!!!! (6:45)
  • Defining the ideal studio family and the ideal length of time students should take lessons (8:32)
  • Steph’s current plan for keeping families at the studio for longer… and what you can take away from this plan!!! (14:36)
  • Parents need more education than their kids… their ignorance can impact your profitability. Here’s what to do about it!(17:15)
  • They key to keeping your numbers high and keeping your studio families interested and happy (22:31)
  • Avoiding Exhaustion! Motivating beginners is a fool’s errand… here’s what to do instead (26:33)
  • Why mental stress may be the reason students struggle to learn basic concepts… and what to do about it (28:31)
  • How to weed out families and students who don’t fit the your vision for the studio (32:16)
  • The #1 thing I recommend for causing parents to take lessons more seriously and filter out families that will flake out on you after 6 months (33:55)
  • Training your staff (or yourself!) on a strategy that gets you the kind of students you want (35:30)
  • The things you need to consider before hiring teachers (38:11)
This is just a handful of the topics we cover. There’s so much more that isn’t even listed here.

Take some time out of your week to listen in on this high value coaching session!
What did you think? What did you learn?

What stood out to you?

Very best,
Daniel
