Is there a way to reliably get more homeschool students?
This is one of those “Holy Grail” problems that every studio and school owner wants to solve.
If we could just find more homeschool students…. We could increase our teaching hours and our income!
This email is all about what you are actually trying to achieve…
The Math of Getting More Homeschoolers
According to the U.S. Census, 21.7% of the entire U.S. population is under the age of 18.
And… 8.4% of the entire U.S. population is between the ages of 5 to 11 (the prime age range for beginning music lessons!).
Now…. here’s where things get interesting.
According to the U.S. Census… 5.4% of all children are homeschooled.
So…. when you are pursuing a strategy of trying to find homeschoolers… what that actually means is that you are trying to target a demographic that is around .2% - .5% of your local child population.
When you apply that number against documented data (which is freely available online)... what that means is that in any given suburban or urban ZIP code… you are actually trying to reach anywhere from 100 - 300 kids in that particular ZIP code.
How do you target those particular parents and families?
Here’s two ways to go about this…
WRONG
Run ads against “homeschool” interests.
In my experience, this is a long shot and doesn’t work very well. It’s just too small an audience.
RIGHT
Build relationships with local homeschool groups and co-ops… in other words, play the long game. I’m talking about networking, my friends! For example:
Sponsor their robotics teams or sports teams.
Follow their public social profiles for their co-op or group.
Get permission to participate in their groups.
Reach out and authentically connect with leaders and sponsors in their communities
By the way, this is exactly what I did in my own studio. And at one point, I had TWO FULL mornings of homeschoolers that I saw!
Yes, you read that right.
One morning started at 7:30am and I went straight through with just a few small breaks until 3:15pm when I started seeing my after-schoolers.
This works!
