This past weekend I shared a photo of me with a shirt that has been in my mind for a looooooong time. I finally made it and LOVE it!
This photo and post got such a great response, that I wanted to speak to this a bit more.
It's not something that gets talked about enough, but being a minority in this niche is not always easy. (add being an immigrant to that and it's a little tougher still!) While The Grove focuses on uplifting, supporting, and encouraging women so they create healthy, sustainable businesses.... there also needs to be support for minorities in our industry. There is not nearly enough diversity in architectural and interior photography, and I hope you'll join me in support of increasing the representation of all shades of skin and countries of birth.
And to be honest, I'm SO proud of the fact that I'm thriving in a niche where I stand out like a sore thumb. But imagine how much stronger we would all be if every one of every color felt proud and supported by their industry.
How can you support?
1. If you visit the Featured Artists section of our Field Notes, you'll see some fantastic interviews with women of color in our industry. In our early days, we did a series of interviews called "Get to Know", that were all about speaking with women of color in interior photography. Please take some time to go read or watch some of them now.
2. We ended up putting this shirt in our shop! They're now available and can be customized with your Latin American country of choice. Please share this with any Latina photographers you may know (interiors or otherwise!). This shirt happens to not be niche-specific, and I guarantee that wearing a shirt like this is an instant feeling of empowerment and pride (I may strut a little extra when I wear mine 🤣 ) |
