Subject: Talk about Licensing with your Clients!

Licensing is a BIG topic.

It’s a tough one for us to understand as photographers, but an even tougher one for our clients to figure out! And when our clients don’t know how licensing works, that’s when there’s misuse of photos and files being passed around to third parties. This is why it’s so important for us to make sure we educate clients and have open communication about licensing - how it works, what it means, and how this affects their freedoms with the files.

Conversations like these can be awkward, but we have the perfect person to help shed some light on this! Contributor Sarah Linden has a two-part series that speaks directly about licensing. First, Sarah covers How to Educate Your Clients On Licensing. In this article she talks about personal experiences, both good and bad, and how you can make sure that licensing is not only a conversation, but an integral part of your workflow. This first article is LIVE on our site so head on over and take a look!

Keep an eye out for Sarah’s continuation of this topic with her second article all about what to do when someone uses your photos without permission (sound familiar? Yep, we’ve all been there!). For now, though, make sure that you’re doing everything you can to clear up the mystery of licensing for your clients.

PRO TIP:

YOU GUYS.

I just found (by accident) that you can make your own presets for how to name files in Lightroom’s export dialogue box!

I typically just use the existing preset of “Custom Name - Sequence” to name my exported files. This allows me to use the address and then have the sequence of photos in order.

Just the other day, though, I did some revisions to several photos in a client set and wanted to alter the name so that we could differentiate which ones were reworked and which were the originals. The problem was, none of the file-naming formats really got me what I wanted!

And then I saw it… the “Edit” option. How did I never see this before?!

I created a little video to show you just how you can customize your file-naming format options next time you export in Lightroom.

Hope you all have a fantastic week!
As always, stay safe and be kind,
xo
