Happy Summer!
How About a Secret Sale?

We thought it was about time to offer you a chance to save a little with a Secret Sale! Secret Sales are our way of saying thank you to our regular customers by offering you a sale of your own. We don’t advertise these sales to the public, so if you plan on coming, make sure you mention the sale at the register to get your discount! These sales are a great way to stock up on chews to keep the dogs busy, to save on supplements and treats, or maybe just to score a cute new collar for the summer. Two other categories of products to think about stocking up on: products to help your pets beat the heat, and products that can help your pets deal with the noise associated with the 4th of July. If you’re new to the Portland area, you might be surprised at the sheer volume of fireworks set off, not only on the 4th but for the weeks leading up to it.

The Details: Saturday, June 20th from 10-6, take 15% off of all regularly priced items except pet food (meals you might put in a bowl, like kibbles, cans and raw diets). There will be other items marked with deeper discounts in the store as well. The discount will also apply to anything that you would like to order that day if it is not in stock.

Shhh - it’s a Secret! We don’t advertise this sale to anyone but you, so mention the sale, or give us a little nod and a wink to let us know you’re in on the secret so that we apply the discount to your purchase. Want to let someone else in on the secret? If you know someone who would appreciate this sale, send them on in and tell them if they sign up for the newsletter at the counter, they are welcome to take part in the sale.

Do you have your costumes picked out yet for the Fremont Fest Pet Parade?

We at Green Dog are very involved in the planning of Fremont Fest, especially the parade, and it's coming up fast!
This year marks the 29th annual Fremont Fest in Beaumont Village (and Green Dog’s 12th Fest) which kicks off at 10am on August 1st with a parade. The street is blocked off and is packed with vendors selling crafts and foods. There are also animal adoptions by local rescues, music stages, fun activities for kids, and most of the businesses on Fremont have sales, raffles, and other fun extras for the day. This year it looks like we might also have a great Beer Garden, with lots of local brewers participating. In recent years we’ve seen about 15,000 people visit our neighborhood to join in the fun!

The true mission of Fremont Fest is this: the businesses on Fremont want to say thank you to our customers for your support, and this festival is our gift to the neighborhood. The Beaumont Business Association works so hard all year, organizing this growing event, on top of all of our regular duties in life as business owners. The parade has traditionally included a giant contingent of kids on decorated bikes, and in 2004 Green Dog decided that the parade needed to include pets. This has been super fun, and in recent years, up to 90 dogs have come to join in the parade fun. We offer prizes for Best Decorated Bikes, Best Float, etc, and of course Best Dog Costume, Best Dog/Human Coordinated Costume, Most Enthusiastic Marchers, Biggest Doggie Smile, among others. Some good news about this year’s parade - Whole Foods has stepped forward to sponsor the parade! This opens up some fun possibilities including things like pre-parade bike decorating station, treat giveaways for the humans, etc. Stay tuned for details.
This is shaping up to be a great Fest!

A New Humane and Sustainable Pet Food on the Market
Open Farm is a unique new kibble for dogs that is designed around humane treatment for farm animals, sustainable sourcing of ingredients, and reducing waste by providing a recycling program for their bags.

Open Farm works exclusively with family farms that follow humane and ethical practices. Each partner farm is audited and certified by leading third-party non-profit organizations in the field to ensure that it meets the highest standard of care. The fish is exclusively ocean caught using sustainable fishing practices, and species caught will vary seasonally to avoid overfishing and protect the aquatic environment (the species of fish will be stamped on the back of the bag near the date code).

They say, “Farm animals deserve our respect and animals living in non-stressed, non-crowded environments yield better and more nutritious food for your pet. By driving demand for products farmed using sustainable and humane practices, we are supporting farmers who take great care and pride in their product. Caring means quality, and the result is more nutritious ingredients grown with love. Together we can evolve toward a model where sustainable farmers are rewarded and companies employing factory farming practices are incentivized to change”.

There are 3 grain free formulas suitable for all life stages, designed for easy rotation between flavors. You can bring the bags back to us for recycling - we’ll turn them in and they’ll be turned into other useful products. Ask for a sample the next time you’re in the store! Read More
Flora 4

We have a nifty little supplement that is quickly becoming one of our favorite products. You’ll find it in silver “tubes” in our supplement area, and it contains something that sounds deceptively simple, but has a wealth of benefits. Flora4 contains guaranteed levels of live probiotics (17 billion cfu/kg) and enzymes (1 million U/kg); effective doses of 21 essential vitamins & minerals; and high levels of Omega 6 & 3 fatty acids – all from raw food – that combine to provide a variety of health benefits for dogs and cats.
It’s designed to be a topper that can fill in nutritional gaps by adding some great whole food nutrition to a processed food diet (like kibbles) and can balance an incomplete homemade diet. But our favorite feature of this supplement is that it takes care of loose stool like a dream! Our new part time employee, Katie, discovered it a few weeks ago for her golden retriever that was having some chronic loose stools. She put a teaspoon on his kibble and by his next bowel movement, he had a formed stool!
This supplement is made from sprouted seeds. Sprouting unlocks and activates massive amounts of vitamins, minerals, probiotics and enzymes stored in nature’s original building blocks. Once sprouted, seeds become highly digestible sources of intense nutrition which is easily absorbed by the body. This is far more effective than relying on synthetic vitamins & minerals which do not work in harmony with natural body metabolism.
When your dog or cat gets its nutrients from real food, it also absorbs thousands of micro-nutrients that surround each vitamin or probiotic, working synergistically with the body to help it absorb and use the vitamins. These micro-nutrients are only available within the natural structure of a whole food and are left behind when a synthetic vitamin is chemically extracted. When added to conventional pet food, Flora4 can provide your pet the missing nutrition just as nature intended. Read more here
Front Range Harness

What a great new harness from Ruff Wear! These fit nicely on a large variety of dogs and seem to stay out of their armpits, making them a good match for most dogs who go running with their people. Best of all, you can attach the leash to either the front or the back, making them more versatile for dogs who sometimes pull. We have 3 colors and all sizes. Read more here
Beat The Heat!

The hot weather has really kicked in early this year, and there are a few products that we have to help you be safe in the heat. Our pets have a hard time this time of year, as the temperature fluctuates so much between cool one day and searing hot the next. This makes it hard for them to adjust, and the hot days can hit some pets harder than others, especially those with shorter noses like Pugs, Boston Terriers, and English bulldogs, or those designed to take on the cold, like Bernese Mountain dogs, Malamutes and Great Pyrenees. Even if your dog is not in these categories, they can still be hit hard by a hot day and can quickly suffer from symptoms of heat exhaustion. We have a few good products for that including cooling beds, portable water bottles and bowls, recirculating water fountains (great for kitties to stay hydrated) and especially Swamp Coolers by Ruff Wear. These are special “jackets” that you soak with water and wring out to create an evaporative cooling effect that also reflects away the sun. It really works to extend the time they can comfortably stay outdoors in the heat. This jacket has been a lifesaver for many dogs, and lets you all enjoy the summer days more comfortably and safely. Heatstroke is no joke, and we talk about things like Swamp Coolers every year because of the dogs we've known, loved, and lost needlessly to heat.
Fireworks Are Coming!

Just a reminder - now's the time to start thinking about how you'll manage the fireworks. Here's a few tips and products that might help:

- If you have a new dog, please don't consider bringing them to a fireworks display. The crowds and the very big noise and smells of the explosives can all be very overwhelming to a dog, and could create a fear of fireworks where they might not have had one before.

- As people generally start setting off a few fireworks in the days leading up to July 4th, you can use these intermittent pops and bangs as opportunities! Keep some high value treats nearby and when you hear a pop, act like that's a really great opportunity for your dog for fun and treats!! If nothing else, at least don't act like you're worried that they will be frightened by the noises, or they might pick up on that and be frightened. It's best to either ignore the noise or act like you think it's fun and treat-worthy.

- Thundershirts can be a very useful tool. These snug wraps can really help to calm and reassure dogs in stressful situations. It's a good idea to pick one up early and put it on sometimes when nothing bad is happening, so they don't learn to think something scary is about to start. Dogs are pretty good at noticing patterns! These don't work for every dog, but they are amazingly helpful for most dogs, and of course returnable. We really have had remarkable success with them. We also carry a variety of calming treats that can be very helpful.
Note: do not use Acepromazine on July 4th as it can increase noise sensitivity.

- On July 4th day, make sure to get all of your pets lots of exercise. Getting them tired will help them not to be so amped up over noises. Burn off that nervous energy! Keep them inside - don't leave them outside as they can panic and run off, or be injured by people playing with fireworks. Offer dogs something new and exciting to chew on that night - chewing often helps dogs deal with stress. Turning on some white noise or music, or even the clothes dryer or a noisy dishwasher can be helpful to drown out the fireworks noise.

- Are your ID tags current? Make SURE that every pet, perhaps even your indoor cats, are wearing their tags - fearful animals can often bolt for the door, and so many pets are lost every year! There's still plenty of time to order a fresh ID tag.

Here's wishing you a fun and safe Fourth of July! (Share the article in this link with your friends to make sure they stay safe too!)
