| Life's Greatest Adventure! | | | | Hi Friend,
Out there on the internet there is probably more contradiction about the meaning of the lunar nodes that any other astrological significator, which makes it quite difficult for people who are learning astrology themselves using search engines as their main source of information.
First of all it is important to know which astrological system you are using, because not all schools of astrology agree with one another in terms of interpretation, and different cosmologies often don't mix. Until relatively recently, the lunar nodes didn't feature too highly in Western Astrology. They had been used for many years in Vedic Astrology as "Rahu" and "Ketu" the dragon's head and tail. In Vedic Astrology they have a specific meaning, and it is unwise to take an interpretation out of context from one astrological system and try to transplant it into another, where it is likely to become distorted.
So in Soul Astrology we need to be clear about the meaning of the lunar nodes in our astrological system. Even as Western Astrologers now begin to look at the lunar nodes and interpret their meaning, many are using the lunar North Node to indicate the path of the Soul. Whereas in Soul Astrology we already use the Ascendant to indicate the path of the Soul, so how should we then interpret the lunar nodes and do they have any relevance for our spiritual journey?
|
| | First of all let's be clear what we are talking about. The Moon doesn't have 'nodes' as such, meaning they aren't physical, tangible, things. The lunar nodes are astrological points: points in space where the Moon's path crosses the path of the ecliptic (the apparent path of the Sun across the sky) so for me there is the first clue to how we should approach their interpretation. Secondly the South Node is associated with the past, while the North Node is associated with the future. So depending upon whether we are talking about the South Node (SN) of the North Node (NN) we could be talking about either a well-worn path (SN) or a new direction (NN).
According to my astrology mentor Alan Oken, the nodal axis is saying something about our relationship with the society into which we were born, while the North Node is indicating how we may be of service to humanity, and something about our "dharma" or spiritual purpose in this lifetime.
Our nodal axis is therefore a reminder that, although we can act independently, we cannot act in isolation - our actions have a ripple effect throughout the consciousness of humanity. In these earlier posts ("Living Soul Astrology, Part Two: Your Personality Signs" and "The Lunar North Node And Your Spiritual Journey") I likened the North Node to a 'spiritual prescription' in the sense that it is indicating a path that, should we choose to accept it, could greatly accelerate our spiritual growth.
A Spiritual Prescription
The nodal axis seems to be what the society is asking from us: what the society is calling forth from us, in a sense what role we are required to play. The South Node is sometimes called the path of least resistance. This is the familiar and well-worn path that we may have played for many lifetimes.
There is nothing wrong with the South Node in itself, and if we continue to follow that path we may still make a valid and valuable contribution to the world, but would we grow? Because it indicates an area of life that we are somewhat complete with, it is thought that there are few lessons left for us to learn. So following the path of the South Node could, in a sense, keep us stuck in our own past, like a virtuoso violinist who just keeps playing the same old familiar piece - so he or she is not pushing his own growth edge.
In contrast the path of the North Node is often called the path of resistance. If we choose this path it won't be easy, simply because it is unfamiliar territory and we don't yet have the necessary skills. Yet it may also be exactly where our Soul wants us to go. It is thought that if we do choose this path, if we do accept the challenge of our North Node, then we will be sent teachers and guides to show us the way. If we choose this path, this is the path that could bring us new experiences, deep insights, and awareness that awaken us even more to our Soul's presence. As such, the North Node is like a spiritual 'prescription' indicating the 'best medicine' to support our healing, growth, and Soul Awareness.
Where is your Life calling you?
Take a look at your own natal chart and see, by sign and house, where the nodal axis lies in your chart. Make some notes in your journal about how you experience your South Node (the qualities and characteristics of the sign, the life activities of the house). Now take a look at your North Node by sign and house. Jot down some ideas.
What might your life look like if you followed your own 'spiritual prescription' ( the path of your north node)?
