With my Moon in Leo in the 2nd house conjunct Uranus (from the 3rd) I'm very independent and have always resisted all attempts to put me into any kind of a box.
I approach psychological profiling with caution... even though curiosity gets the better of me so of course I've checked my Myers-Briggs type, my Enneagram type, my Honey & Mumford learning styles profile, my Strengthsfinder profile and various others over the years! I check them and then take them with a pinch of salt because, underneath it all, I've always had a sense that none of it is really me.
So you might wonder why on earth I'm interested in astrology, because that is surely another kind of psychological typing system based on zodiac signs, right?
Well, not quite, or at least I don't believe so. I think as astrologers, if we fall into the habit of thinking of people strictly in terms of fixed 'types' then we do ourselves, and our clients, a disservice. Yet we all have a tendency to do it. I often catch myself thinking in terms of people as types... and it is one of those things that most drives people nuts about astrologers - me included!

| | We all hate it when anyone stereotypes us - and for good reason - because it strips away our precious individuality (which is vital for our spiritual growth). And yet we all do it. So why do we do it, and how can we stop?
As we progress on our spiritual path we become ever more deeply aware that everything is energy. Especially as our intuition opens up and we become more skilful in our capacity to perceive the quality of energy.
A human being is a continuous flowing energy field (yes even if you do have a fixed t-square or two in your chart and perhaps even a fixed grand cross). Think about it... are your feet nailed to the floor? Can you move about freely? Exactly. There is nothing permanent about you and even deeply ingrained, entrenched, habit patterns that you may have carried over from a past life are not set in stone. Everything can change (even Taureans and Aquarians).
When we study astrology, and the energetics of each zodiac sign, and then start relating that to our personality signs - mainly our Sun and Moon - it seems as though we are studying our personality type. In a sense we are, but only from the perspective of being aware of energy and the qualities of energy involved. Indeed we can learn a lot about ourselves by studying astrology and especially from an intuitive perspective (which means we are more aware of how energy is flowing).
Where we can go wrong is when we start believing that what we are studying is permanent. Nothing is permanent. In fact everything has a season, Nature works in cycles and astrology is the study of these ever changing cycles. Nature is cyclical in nature!
We can see this when we look at the three modalities or 'qualities' in astrology (cardinal, fixed and mutable), which refer to the quality of energy, or it's mode of expression (modality). Cardinal energy is the energy of spring. Think of an acorn that has been beneath the earth germinating throughout the winter. In spring a new shoot appears, with an arrow-like tip probing it's way forward through the earth towards the light. Pushing its way onwards and upwards, over and around all obstacles, moving earth and small stones out of its way until it eventually breaks out above ground and begins the race towards the sky. Cardinal energy has a pioneering quality that seeks out new frontiers.
Next our acorn plant needs fixed energy. The shoot needs strength and stability if it is to continue its upwards journey. Fixed energy Will strengthen and stabilise the trunk of our tree, it will support the branches and strengthen them, it will provide a framework of vessels that will unfold into leaves. Fixed energy has a stabilising quality that provides structure and form.
When autumn arrives those leaves will begin to dissolve. Energy will be withdrawn back to the earth. Physical structures will decompose, break down, and dissolve so the energy can be released and reused by nature. That is mutable energy. Mutable energy dissolves one cycle so that another may begin, so it acts as a bridge between cycles. Mutable energy has a flexible, dissolving quality to it that allows for change and adaptation.
This is how nature rolls! Is there anything permanent about this? No. It is one infinite, never-ending, continuous flow of Energy. We are not separate from nature. So by nature, we must also be one continuous flow of energy.
So what do we mean when we talk about spirituality? What we really mean by spirituality is understanding our true nature, as opposed to the illusions generated by our mind.
“I hope that you understand what the word “spiritual” really means. It means to search for, to investigate, the true nature of the mind. There’s nothing spiritual outside. My rosary isn’t spiritual; my robes aren’t spiritual. Spiritual means the mind, and spiritual people are those who seek its nature.” It is a function of our egoic mind to create an illusion of permanence. This is important because it allows us to function in practical terms, in our everyday world. However, it also causes problems because we believe our own illusions. It isn't psychological profiling (or the art and science of astrology) that is to blame for our misconceptions. It is our human mind and what we do with information (by taking it on as though it was a permanent feature). Once we realise that, we have the freedom to use tools such as psychological profiling and astrology to support us in gaining a greater understanding of how our minds actually work. The key is to be aware of any tendency that we may have to believe in 'fixed' and permanent personality types, rather than simply recognising energy patterns that we are working with. Your horoscope is there for guidance, it is not a life sentence set in stone. Don't be overly concerned about fixed or challenging aspects in your chart. Think of them as powerful catalysts for change, evolution, and ultimately your spiritual growth. So what type are you? Ultimately, in our hearts, human beings are essentially the same in the sense that we're all beings of Light, Love, Peace and Joy. Where we differ is in our unique individual expression of that light. So when thinking in terms of your type, just remember what you are really talking about is a fluid, flowing, expression of energy, which you can change in any moment.
