Hi Friend,

Recently a client asked 'what is the pain body', and this is an excellent question for us all. As we go deeper in our own journey of self-exploration it is not only worth some consideration, but also very close observation, yet until we have some experience with self-observation we may not be able to recognize it in ourselves. Initially we can equip ourselves with an idea of what the pain body is, so that we can begin to look for it in action, in ourselves.

So let's begin by looking at what it is. I first came across the term 'pain body' in Eckhart Tolle's book "The Power of Now". I had his companion book called "Practising The Power of Now", which, when used as a daily practice, helped me to see my own 'pain body' as I dipped in and out of it throughout the day. The pain body at it's simplest level could be described as our own personal 'body' or 'collection' of negative thinking, but in simplifying it like this we may underestimate how real it can feel, and why it is so important to observe and understand it more deeply.

If we don't pay attention to our 'pain body' (by closely observing our thoughts and associated feelings) we can come to believe it is who we are. Most of us experience thoughts in association with certain people, conditions, or situations. If you watch your mind closely you will see how this works, your mind will generate similar thoughts in association with certain people and events. These thoughts generate associated feelings, for example of sadness, anger, fear, jealousy, frustration etc. When feelings are prolonged (because we are continually thinking the thoughts that are creating them) they become a mood, and when moods are prolonged they become our temperament. As we get older our range of thoughts and feelings becomes narrower, and this temperament feels as though it is who we are.

This is evident to us in the thoughts we might call 'limiting beliefs', for example: "I can't do this", "I'll never win", "This always happens to me", "This is just how I am" etc. This type of thinking, and the associated feelings, generate a magnetic field around us that can feel almost solid and real. All of this can be thought of as our 'pain body'. In his book "Awakening The Sacred Body", Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche calls it the 'conceptual karmic pain body'.

This is very helpful because it is a reminder that, although it feels very solid and real, as though it is something that has great power over us, it is after all only a collection of thoughts and feelings generated by our own concepts. In other words, it is a collection of ideas that we are holding about ourselves and others, that we are unwittingly recreating on a daily basis, even though it causes us great pain. It's like a cloud that we generate in our own mind, and carry around with us, believing it to be who we are.

Sometimes this is easier to see in others than ourselves, and yet we can still be fooled by the illusion. For example, when we experience very negative or critical people, we can also believe it is who they are, rather than seeing their 'negativity' as just a product of their own pain body. It is not who they are. It is not who you are. At our core we are all beings of light.
Rather than criticizing or judging others for being negative, it is much more helpful if we turn within and look at the habitual thoughts our own mind is generating, that create our habitual identities. With practice, and self-observation, we can learn to let them go. When we drop the 'cloud' and live with clear space around us, we not only bring a different quality of energy to all our relating, and to the world, but we also experience our own true nature free from any false ideas about who we are.
That's all for now see you next time, and in the meantime... happy exploring!

Best Wishes,

Ruth
