| Life's Greatest Adventure!

Saturday June 21st was the Summer Solstice in the northern hemisphere (the Winter Solstice for the southern hemisphere). This is the day the Sun enters the sign of Cancer and 'stands still'* marking the first day of summer (or winter if you are in the southern hemisphere), the turning point of the seasons, and the beginning of Cancer Season...

| The light is at it's highest peak (the Sun is highest in the sky) and the nights are very short, if at all! For countries within the arctic circle the Sun doesn't set at this time of the year which is why they were given the name 'the land of the midnight Sun'. It was a very symbolic and significant time for ancient people when it truly did appear that light had 'triumphed' over darkness.
Even when I lived in the north of Scotland, which is way below the arctic circle, it still didn't get very dark this time of year. The Sun would 'set', meaning it just dipped below the horizon a little before midnight, and started to rise again around 2.30am!
This brings us to the symbolism and mystery of the sign of Cancer. In a sense Cancer is a sign of paradoxes: it is associated with home, family, our tribe, our roots, our ancestry, birth, incarnation, and also those highest of human qualities, empathy and compassion.
Water signs are all about mastery of emotions, and cardinal signs are creative, pioneering and initiating. Cardinal energy is all about leadership. Your Cancerian friend might seem quiet and introverted, even shy at times, but put them in a situation where people need care or support and watch them shine.
As the cardinal water sign, Cancer takes the lead in how we treat one another, how we relate to one another and how we support one another. It is the sign of emotional intelligence and Cancerians are the ultimate 'people people'. People matter more to them than possessions, money, status, intellectual concepts, personal gain, or practically anything else in fact!
Esoterically, it is in Cancer that we first become aware of our connectedness, and on the spiritual path it is in the sign of Cancer that we first become aware of our light. The light of awareness 'dawns' in Cancer, and we are faced with a choice: we can continue down the road of tribalism and separation, or we can follow the light to the highest vibration of Cancer where we recognize that our true family is our human family, and that we are all one.
This becomes possible when we cultivate the qualities of Cancer. Of all the signs, Cancer is the one most associated with fear. If you have Sun, Moon or Rising Sign in Cancer, transmuting the energy of fear is part of your spiritual path. Cancer has an amazing sensing capacity, an in-built personal radar, where subtle vibrations in the ocean of consciousness can be detected. This means that much of the fear which Cancer experiences is not personal but rather they are tuning in to the fear of the collective.
When Cancer realizes her full power, she knows that she also has the power to transform fear into positive spiritual energy on behalf of the collective. This helps to spiritually nurture herself and her whole human family. When Cancer becomes a master of transmuting energy in this way, through emotions, that is the spiritual path of Cancer and the true triumph of light.
