| Life's Greatest Adventure!

When I was 17 there was a movie I wanted to see at the cinema and there was no-one else to go with. So for the first time I just went by myself. The year was 1977, a big year in many ways and a kind of rite of passage. It was the year that Elvis died, and the BIG movie was Star Wars.
Whenever anyone asked me if I believed in God I used to say I thought there was something, not an old man in a beard but a kind of life-force energy. Now here it was on the big screen and everyone was saying 'may the force be with you'! Life-force energy had gone mainstream. It's hard to tell just how influential Star Wars has been in paving the way for our acceptance of 'invisible forces' that permeate our Universe! I've also heard that George Lucas (the creator of Star Wars) had an interest in Tibetan buddhism and that Yoda was modelled on the great master, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, but I digress…

| | There has long been an idea that there is some kind of vitalizing force to the Universe. Vitalism was a popular belief in the west during 17th, 18th and 19th century based on the idea that living organisms had some kind of 'invisible vitalizing force' or 'spark of life'. This idea goes back at least as far as ancient Egypt, and possibly further, although vitalism waned in popularity in the 20th century as we began our love affair with 'objective science'.
One of the advantages of meditation is that we come to know subtle energy and perceive subtle 'forces' for ourselves through direct experience. Then when we combine it with the ancient language of astrology, it enables us to make fine distinctions between different 'energies'. In astrology the vitalizing force, or life-force energy, is symbolized by the Sun. In the vitalism movement it was often thought that 'life-force' energy was our Soul and there is definitely a connection, but there may also be a subtle distinction.
In the east a vitalizing 'life-force' energy has always been acknowledged. In the yogas of India this is known as prana, in China it is called chi. In Tibet lung or 'wind' (lung is Tibetan for wind) is the name given to this subtle energy that permeates our being.
The work of Alice Bailey, including Esoteric Astrology, is a series of teachings given by the Tibetan Master D.K. and transmitted through her. Some esoteric scholars have evidence to suggest that the Tibetan may have been the Abbot of Tashi Lhunpo monastery in Tibet. If this is the case he would certainly have studied the Tibetan wisdom teachings in great depth, and is likely to also have been a practitioner of the Tibetan Yogas. I believe that by understanding the Tibetan system we can develop a clearer understanding of Esoteric Astrology.
In the Tibetan system it is said that there is a basic 'ground' to our being, a 'clear light mind'. We might equate this with primordial consciousness. From this the 'winds' arise, this is what we might think of as life-force energy, and then thoughts are carried forward on these 'winds' and manifest as life forms. So we can see that there is a distinction between our Soul and life-force energy. Prana, chi, lung (wind), or life-force energy can be thought of as a bridge between our Soul, our non-physical sacred self, and our physical body. More importantly, having arisen from 'primordial consciousness', it is also conscious.

If our Ascendant, or Rising Sign, symbolizes our Soul (as mentioned in my previous articles) then the Sun symbolizes the 'wind energy', prana, the vital spark that is carrying our Soul Purpose forward into this lifetime. We could say that our Soul Purpose is expressed through the 'lens' of our Sun and Moon signs (we'll talk about the Moon another time). This makes sense of why the Sun symbolizes our health, our vitality, and our unique individual creative expression. It is an individualized creative spark of Divinity being expressed as us!
Example: Libra Rising, Sun in Cancer.
If we are a Libra Soul, our Soul Purpose is to bring in greater degrees of harmony and balance into the world through right relationship (see my article on Soul Purpose). If we have Sun in Cancer we will do that through empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence. So the consciousness, or subtle energy, of harmonics (the higher octave of Libra) will be expressed through the individual in the form of empathy and compassion. The vitality, the life-force energy, the 'light of life', will be Cancerian in nature, but in this case the underling motive will be greater harmony, balance and 'right relationship'.
So we can see how our Sun and Rising Sign work together. Our Rising Sign is bringing a subtle purpose through our consciousness, which is being 'vitalized' and expressed into the world, through our Sun sign. In other words the qualities of our Sun give us the vital energy we need to carry forward our Soul Purpose. |
