Life's Greatest Adventure! | | | | Hi Friend,
We don't often think about 'letting go' until we are faced with the really big losses in our lives, such as the death of a loved one, a separation, divorce, or some other major loss that forces us to look at where we need to let go. But when practiced on a daily basis, with the smaller things in life, the 'art' of letting go can be a path to peace and the discovery of our true spiritual nature...
|
| I remember a story about two monks who were traveling together when they came to a river. On the bank of a river was an old lady who was trying to get across. One of the monks picked her up and carried her to the other side, whereupon he set her down and they continued on their way.
The second monk was troubled about this for quite some time afterwards until eventually he said, "You know we took strict vows never to touch a woman. How could you have picked her up and carried her like that?"
To which the first monk replied: "I only carried her across the river, how long have you been carrying her?"
This simple story illustrates the power of our own mind, to keep us agitated and distracted from the present moment - like the second monk who allowed his mind to become disturbed by the idea of carrying the woman.
Often we begin our day by 'carrying' things in our mind that agitate us - like our 'to do' list, for example. We 'carry' thoughts and problems in our mind about what we need to do that day, or what we might do about a problem, or a myriad of other things. Yet it is still possible to work through our day and do what needs to be done, without constantly thinking about things.
A very simple practice that can help us to return to our inner peace is this: when we become aware that we are anxious or agitated, we can ask ourselves "what do I need to let go of here?" We might notice that we are carrying thoughts or concerns about something that aren't really helpful or necessary. If we really watch our mind closely we realize that most of our 'worrying' is just not helpful. It doesn't bring us to a solution, but rather just keeps our mind spinning like a dog chasing it's tail.
For example, I don't need to keep thinking "I must write my newsletter today". I can relax and enjoy each moment, until it's time to write it, and then just do it, and still be relaxed while I'm writing it. There are many 'small' things like this that we don't need to be so concerned about. It's just that thinking, or worrying, about whatever we need to do just becomes a habit. With this technique, and a little practice, we can break that habit and be much more relaxed as we go through our working day.
When practiced regularly like this, 'letting go' can become a regular spiritual practice that can help you to return to your natural state of peace and joy in each moment.
