This week I thought we’d take a deeper look at the current Saturn-Neptune square that I mentioned in an earlier newsletter, because right now we are experiencing it. It's one thing to talk about experiencing your authentic light, yet it's quite another when your structured life and belief systems begin dissolving around you!
We all have a powerful opportunity to look deeply into our own lives to see how we are experiencing this particular energy dynamic* on an individual basis, and that there is a higher purpose for our lives.
It's also good to remind ourselves that, even though it might feel like your life is turning to 'mush' right now, this is exactly what happens to a caterpillar, just before the butterfly emerges...

| | Saturn is normally associated with structure, limitation, consolidation, responsibility, authority and rules. Esoterically Saturn is said to rule the ‘structure of mind’ - it’s worth taking a moment to understand what that really means. In our everyday lives, our minds tend to work in a structured kind of a way. We have routines, habits, methods and learning processes. If you have a strong placement of Saturn in your chart somewhere in your life (depending upon the sign and house placement of Saturn) you will be familiar with this process of method and organization.
Take a moment now and think about where your Saturn placement is and how it relates specifically to the structure of your mind: your ability to think methodically, plan and organize your thoughts.
The structure of mind also relates to the physical structures through which we experience ind. This would be our neurology, or our brain-wiring if you like. When we are born we are fairly open and then throughout our lives, through learning and experience, our brain creates specific neurons relative to our experiences. We basically learn to react and respond in a similar way to a similar stimulus. So we become conditioned. This conditioning process is also ruled by Saturn, and it is how you formed your belief system.
At the moment Saturn is in Sagittarius which is the sign of truth, freedom and goals. The highest soul purpose of Sagittarius is to uplift humanity through the revelation of truth and wisdom, however Sagittarius is the sign of the seeker on the path and the philosopher. Until Sagittarius reaches a higher consciousness, there can be a tendency to latch on to a philosophy (belief system) in the search for 'truth'. This can also lead to a zealous idealism if Sagittarius decides that they have discovered ‘the’ truth in the form of a particular belief system.
Our journey of spiritual awakening is sometimes described as a process of letting go. Every time we latch on to a belief or an ideal in our search for ‘truth’ we will, sooner or later, be forced to confront the limitations of that ideal and let it go. As we awaken into higher consciousness, we realize that there is a deeper universal truth that cannot be put into words, turned into a philosophy or idealized.
From a higher consciousness perspective, Saturn is associated with authenticity. Consciousness permeates the entire Universe, indeed the Universe arises from consciousness and is just one aspect of consciousness. Consciousness itself is therefore not dependent upon your brain wiring, or your neurology, for it’s existence! This is a deep spiritual truth that is known by spiritual masters and yogi’s who have been able to access higher states of consciousness through deep meditation.
In the Tibetan Dzogchen tradition it is said that the clear light mind is beyond the brain. In the West we think of our brain as the ‘creator’ of consciousness, and that if we have a brain injury we no longer have consciousness, yet this is only one tiny aspect of the vast Universal consciousness that we are part of.
Once we go beyond the limitation of our brain wiring we are able to access the ‘clear light mind’ beyond, and understand the true nature of reality. This is why the higher perspective of Saturn is authenticity: once we have the capacity to go beyond the limitations of our own brain-wiring (the structure of mind) we can access the true nature of reality (authenticity). So at the highest level Saturn can lead us to experience reality as it is. Saturn in Sagittarius has the potential to lead us to this highest truth if we can stay focused on the ultimate ‘goal’ and avoid the pitfalls of attachment to idealistic philosophies and belief systems.
Neptune is one of the planets of transformation (see my earlier series on Neptune). Neptune transforms through a three-step process of illusion, disillusionment and finally illumination. Neptune is said to dissolve what it touches. Buddhist Astrologer Jhampa Shaneman describes Neptune as the ‘spiritualizing pole’ because Neptune also ‘spiritualizes’ what it touches.
It is Neptune’s ability to dissolve structures that can lead to illumination: by dissolving the structures of mind and limiting beliefs that are in our way Neptune can reveal the clear light beyond, leading to greater illumination. Neptune is currently in the sign of it’s dignity in Pisces. The highest spiritual purpose of Pisces is Universal Love. Esoterically Pisces is the sign of the sacred heart and it is through Pisces that the sacred heart of humanity will awaken and we will realize the truth of our connectedness as all human hearts beat as one.
During the current Saturn-Neptune square then we can begin to see both the pitfalls and the potential. If we get caught in lower consciousness, there can be the exaggerated ‘idealism’, zealousness and fanaticism that is associated with both Sagittarius and Pisces. This happens when we have too much attention on the outer world, and how it ‘ought’ to be. Because Neptune is in dignity in Pisces, Neptune is the more powerful planet in this Saturn-Neptune contact. There is the potential for Neptune to do his greatest work in dissolving extreme belief systems and connecting humanity through compassion.
This Saturn-Neptune square challenges humanity to rise above the limitations of our mind. To avoid the temptation to create even more idealistic ‘philosophies’ and belief systems to impose on one another, and to experience the reality of our deep heart connection. If we stay connected through our hearts, Neptune can do it’s highest work (through Universal Compassion), dissolve our limiting belief systems and lead us to the highest truth and illumination in the clear light mind!
So how is it for you? Take a look at what is happening in your own life at the moment, to see where you may 'emerge into the light' by 'dissolving' limiting beliefs and embracing your authenticity!
