Life's Greatest Adventure! | | | | Hi Friend,
Spiritual and religious traditions tell us that we are one. We are connected. We are beings of light and love, and we are at one with the Divine. Yet for most of us, this isn't our everyday experience. We don't often wake up in the morning and think, "Oh yes. Here I am. I recognize my Divinity!" Or even if we do, it often is just that: a thought, but not a direct experience. In order to really know the truth of our Divine connection, we have to experience it directly for ourselves. Otherwise it is just hearsay: a nice idea we have heard about but never experienced. But how do we experience Divinity directly for ourselves?
|
| To be able to experience Divinity directly we need to cultivate our intuition*. Intuition is the bridge between our ordinary, everyday, logical world, and the world of spiritual union. Master astrologer Alan Oken describes intuition as,
"the ability to perceive the quality of energy within the form".
So what does that mean? It means we cultivate our capacity for perception, through which we are able to perceive reality directly.
The human body is an instrument of perception. We are actually already designed to perceive reality directly through our senses: touch, taste, sight, smell and sound. So what gets in our way? The problem is that we think that we are already perceiving reality directly. After all, we open our eyes in the morning and we see the world, right? It's right there. There's your bedroom. There's your bed. All familiar. Everything in the same place as it was yesterday. What else it there?
Masters in many spiritual traditions such as Zen, or the Tibetan Dzogchen system, tell us that the way we usually see things is not reality! Throughout the course of our lives our minds have been conditioned by our experience. In other words we are trained to see reality in a certain way, and to put labels on things. Look out of the window. What do you see? Sky? Clouds? Trees? Grass? A street? Cars? People? Or do you see a continuous flow of energy? A continuous process of Divinity, rising and falling as Life, in many forms?
Through a complex process of conditioning (the same process that enables us to learn stuff) instead of perceiving reality directly we actually experience an intricate illusion. A hologram projected by our brain. Yes our senses do receive information, but that information is processed by our brain and converted into our familiar-looking reality.
In this way we are conditioned to see separation. We are conditioned to see ourselves as a separate self, interacting with separate objects. So in order to have a real experience of ourselves as one with 'all that is' we need to change that conditioning. This is the purpose behind all spiritual practices including yoga and meditation. They are designed to change the way we see the world by cultivating our capacity for perception. In other words, by developing our intuition.
Let It Be! A very simple practice to help you to cultivate your intuition is the 4 'chozhag' or let be's from the Dzogchen tradition. To try this, find yourself somewhere comfortable to sit, preferably upright with your spine straight, and then just rest for as long as possible, practicing the four let be's as follows:
1. Leave your body exactly as it is. This means don't keep thinking about and adjusting your posture - just let it be.
2. Let your eyes rest, seeing whatever. Gaze softly straight ahead of you, and let your eyes rest on whatever is there. Don't try to do anything or focus on anything. Just let them be!
3. Let your mental activity be just as it is. It will settle on its own. Don't try to change anything, or impose a sense of peacefulness, but don't follow thoughts either. Just let them rise and fall. Let them be!
4. Let your entire sensory and inner experience just be. All feelings, emotions and sensations, are just left alone. Don't do anything to change them. Just let them be!
Practices such as this develop your capacity to perceive subtler and subtler levels of energy and light, both in and around yourself. By simply resting in pure awareness your brain gradually releases your conditioned view of the world and you begin to experience reality as it really is, rather than projecting an 'idea' about it out onto the world.
Through this process of cultivating your perception, your intuitive capacity, you gradually come to meet and really know your real self, maybe for the first time, as the Divine spiritual being of love and light that you truly are.
