This week one of our readers, Anoo, asked the following question:
"Do you believe in the concept of 'twin souls'? If yes, at some stage, would it be possible to share your thoughts with your followers..."
Great question Anoo! Thank you for asking and I will share some thoughts below. However, first I would like to tweak your question slightly. Let's take 'belief' out of the equation and explore the question:
"Could Twin Souls Exist?"
The simple answer is, I don't know, because I do not yet have the capacity for clear perception, but let's explore the subject a little... Enjoy! |

| If we don't have the capacity for direct perception, how can we really know anything? Well, we can't know for sure until we do (have clear perception), but we can learn from the experiences and commentaries of spiritual masters who have gone before us, and then relate that to our own experience. For that to happen we need to cultivate discernment, in knowing which spiritual teachers and masters are best qualified to comment on the subject, because they personally had a great capacity to perceive reality as it is.
Could Twin Souls Exist?
In exploring this question, my first thought is what exactly is a twin soul? In fact, what is our Soul? And can it have a 'twin'? I first explored this topic in an earlier newsletter, which you can read here, and I will add some additional comments below.
The reason I changed Anoo's original question, is because belief alone is not helpful to our spiritual journey. I might believe that there are elephants on the Moon but it is neither relevant or helpful to your spiritual path. You could waste a whole lifetime building rockets to see if elephants really do live on the Moon, when your time would be better spent in deep spiritual practice, whereby you develop your capacity for clear perception. Then you would be able to perceive directly whether elephants are on the Moon, without wasting your time trying to prove a belief that may turn out to be false.

As we go deeper on our journey, becoming more awake and alert, cultivating our capacity to perceive reality as it is, we naturally move away from believing in concepts at face value. It is important to realise that all concepts are man-made. Concepts, or ideas, are thoughts that arise from our imagination and most concepts will actually cloud our vision, distract us, and prevent us from directly perceiving reality as it is.
Rarely, a concept may be based on spiritual truth, and by looking more closely we can arrive at a deeper understanding of our spiritual path. So when we are presented with a concept (an idea) we need to go deeper to see if there is an underlying spiritual reality, that supports it.
What is a Soul?
When most people talk about a Soul, they project their personality onto it. So they imagine their Soul as a larger version of themselves, that somehow 'owns' and controls their body, mind, and their experiences. They don't really experience their Soul directly. In fact, your Soul is not an extension of you, but rather you are just a small part of a greater consciousness, of which you are largely unaware, and that is your Soul.
For our purposes here Soul can be thought of as an individualized experience of Divinity. If the whole of existence (seen and unseen; physical and non-physical) were an ocean, then we may consider our Soul to be like a glass of water taken from that ocean. It is still part of the ocean, it still has all the qualities of the ocean, and it will eventually return to the ocean, yet for a short time it is having an individualized experience.
Our individualized experience happens as a result of our personality. Our individual conditioning from this and past lives. At the Soul level, there is no separation. We are all connected. In a sense you could say that we are all 'twins' at Soul level. So can it be possible in some way for our Soul to have a twin?
My thought (and I could be wrong - it really is just a thought) is that, most of us won't have a twin Soul in the way that most people think. The idea of twin Souls seems to me to be a mental concept that is rooted in our personality's desire to have a special companion, or a special meaningful connection with a significant 'other'. We might have a beautiful and very strong connection with someone that feels very special, unique, powerful, and meaningful, nevertheless it doesn't mean our Soul has a 'twin'.
Having said that, there are reports of enlightened and Holy beings who can split their consciousness to incarnate as four or five physical beings all at once. These accounts come from spiritual masters who have very high capacity for perception and are able to perceive reality directly in ways that we cannot. So we can trust that there may be some spiritual reality underpinning this idea. If this is true, and there are four or five incarnations of an enlightened being in existence at the same time, I'm still not sure this is analogous to the widely held concept of twin souls.
So thank you again for your question Anoo. In short I really don't have the capacity to determine whether twin Souls are possible or not, but I will close on the same note that I ended my previous article on this subject:
The most powerful connection in this entire Universe is love. If you have a meaningful relationship that is based on love, then that is the most important factor. Whether your Souls are 'twins' or not, becomes insignificant in the light of the love that you share. |
