Does astrology improve our lives? This isn't a passing thought but something I'm strongly passionate about. I mean, why bother if it isn't going to be helpful, right? So how can astrology be helpful? Well that's down to each of us, as an individual. It is our own attitude and approach to the subject that makes the difference.
For many astrology is a passing interest. They'll read the horoscopes in the Sunday paper and then go about their business not doing anything differently. For others it can be used as a working tool to support our personal and spiritual development. It can be a signpost on the path to enlightenment, if we know how to use it. Any tool is only good if we know how to use it skilfully.
For many astrology is still seen only in terms of prediction. Historically it is said that for hundreds of years kings and warriors consulted astrologers mainly to help decide the best times to plan major events such as an important battle and that the personal horoscopes we use today are a relatively recent innovation.
Since the early 20th century we have seen the advent of psychological astrology, at least within the branch of astrology known as Western Astrology. Brilliant astrologers too numerous to mention, of whom Charles Carter, Alan Leo, Dane Rudhyar, Stephen Arroyo, Howard Sasportas and Liz Greene are just a few notable examples, have been exploring what astrology can tell us about the human psyche. Even one of the forefathers of modern psychology Carl Jung, deeply explored astrology for what it can tell us about the human mind.
Looking to astrology to learn about ourselves is a relatively recent development in human history and looking to astrology as a tool to support our spiritual path is even more recent again. It speaks to the evolution of human consciousness. Until relatively recently the majority of people weren't the slightest bit interested in their spiritual path. This may still be the case but now there is a growing wave of interest in spiritual awareness rippling through human consciousness.
Astrology has always been there to answer our most important questions. So when we get to the deepest questions of all, who are we and why are we here, how can astrology be helpful? This is where Soul Astrology can be very helpful. Rooted in Western Astrology and based on the works of Alice Bailey (and more recently Alan Oken) Soul Astrology gives us a language of energy and light.
For anyone who actively practices yoga, meditation and/or any regular mindfulness practice designed to bring you into awakening through deeper contact with your true spiritual nature - Soul Astrology offers a language that describes the subtle dynamics and energetics that you are experiencing. Anything that can give language to our experience is extremely valuable. Of course astrology alone can't improve your life only you can do that! But if you learn the language of astrology, and then use it to help you distinguish the energetic dynamics that are playing out in your life, it can be a practical tool that supports your spiritual development.
