One of the things I would tell a veteran is, you know, the first thing you need to do is take an assessment of where you are. And you know if you are having a hard time out there in the workforce and you're unable to, you know, to function, you know, know that there are programs out there that will help you. |

Be resilient. Don't give up, don't stop at the first step. Road block you hit, because I know I said it earlier, there's so much out there that is being offered to the veterans.

| This week’s podcast episode is a very special one and you don’t want to miss it!
In this episode we are did things a little differently. Instead of featuring one guest, I interviewed two.
Two unique business owners, both women both Veterans that have leveraged the Veterans Administration Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment Program (VR&E) to build their businesses. Did I mention that these two are Govcon Giants members? After retiring from the Army, Raffa Gibbard worked with the United Postal Service. As an Engineer, when she was in Afghanistan, she did some contracting and was able to see how much opportunity was there. While serving she also received some acquisition certifications so, therefore when life presented some personal challenges, she knew she wanted to continue working in the construction field but this time as a contractor. She is the owner of Brave One Contract Agency. After retiring from the Army, Renona Riddle Brown continued working as in the federal government with the Social Security Administration, Veteran Affairs and Customs and Border Patrol. At this time in her life as she was facing some life changes, she felt like she still had so much to offer to the world and also wanted to have that quality of life for herself and feel that she is giving back. Renona is the Founder and Owner of HuRmar Solutions.
In this episode we explore each of their stories and how they were able to design their own path to entrepreneurship while the Department of Veteran Affairs supported aided them along their journey.
What makes them unique is that they used two different Vocational Rehab Veteran Employment tracks to accomplish their goals. "I would just reiterate to use the SBLO’s at the large prime contractors. So, our role is to help the small businesses be able to have a hand to guide them through the government contracting process at our own companies. So use us for that. Don’t abuse us, but use us for the act and use it as a way to help understand more about the various aspects of the company that you can work with and really, you know, within the small business community."
Amber Hanlon has been a Govcon Giant for many years advocating on behalf of small businesses as the Small Business Liaison Officer (SBLO) for what was formerly known as Rockwell Collins.
In this role, Amber has responsibility for implementing the Department of Defense Mentor-Protégé Program, leading Small Business Executive Steering Team, training internal employees on opportunities for small businesses and assisting small businesses in expanding their reach.
In today’s episode we common mistakes that small businesses make when attending seminars and events. Experiences of small firms working with Rockwell Collins, and the process that she uses to bring firms into the fabric of the organization.
