Hey Friend
Building an expert business alone can be hard and also lonely.
I know, because around 4 years ago I quit my job to work from home full time. I only moved to Melbourne 6 years ago and literally have no physical friends here.
They are all Virtual...
I'm not saying that's a bad thing but I know how easy it is to get caught up in your own little coaching world.
You have a structure that works, you learn by trial and error, (constantly reiterating and learning as you go along) and you are signing new clients. (hopefully)
But being stuck in your own little bubble can quickly turn into a rut wouldn't you agree?
What about those times when your clients' issues leave you puzzled? Or you have that nagging feeling you could have handled something with a lot better or demonstrated more expertise?
As coaches or experts, we need to follow the guidance we offer our clients. Practice what we Preach so to speak. It is critical to grow, expand, and be open to new insights, feedback, and strategies.
Actors have directors. Professional athletes have coaches and trainers. Employees have managers who sit in on meetings with them, evaluate their performance, and offer feedback and guidance.
What do all these professionals have in common?
They are regularly observed and given feedback in their place of work, while doing their job. This is how we learn and improve. Most coaching training includes observation; why does this stop once we are coaching others? Who observes us?
Well, today I'm here to say NO to coaching in isolation
Here are some helpful ways to integrate outside observation and feedback into your coaching or expert business:
• Enlist the help of a coaching mentor or trainer They can observe group coaching sessions (with client permission, of course) or set up simulated coaching sessions.
• Study the coaches you admire Join live, online sessions with 'super coaches'. Observe their coaching style for inspiration and ideas. My 'go too' are Podcasts.
• Watch real group coaching sessions online Pay to access group coaching sessions online that feature skilled, experienced coaches. Q&A for coaches is available post-session.
• Become an enrolling superstar See if your mentor/coach or an accountability partner will practice sales calls with you so you can get better at your craft and close more clients on your discovery sessions.
• Engage with your communities There is a tendency to approach coaching competitively: there is a limited client pool and we have to keep our cards close to our chest. But that's not true. We each have unique qualities and skills that attract clients to us. Learn from your peers. We don't have to go it alone. Interact and share in social media groups or in person.
