Healthy Hiring: 4 Steps to Systematic Recruiting
by Pete Tosh, Founder, The Focus Group

Last week's lead article compared sloppy hiring practices to a junk food diet. Neither is likely to produce optimum results. The point had to do with discipline. Good health requires a balanced diet, exercise, and limited burger intake. Similarly, it takes a systematic and well-planned approach to recruit candidates that contribute to the success of your organization.

The second article in a series on systematic recruiting lists four steps that describe a systematic approach to recruiting and interviewing:
  1. Define the Parameters - Develop the objectives and specific job criteria for the hiring process.
  2. Do the Prep Work – Review the resume and map out a strategy ahead of the interview.
  3. Let the Candidate Talk – The candidate should do 80% or more of the talking during the interview.
  4. Focus on Accomplishments – Descriptions of the applicant's past behavior are the best predictors of future performance.
A disciplined approach to hiring isn't as easy as simply filling positions with "warm bodies," but the results can be measured in higher productivity, increased morale, improved customer relationships, employees who are engaged and contribute to your organization's success.

Lower level employees have seen real-wage decreases since 2008, according to Korn Ferry Senior Client Partner, Tom McMullen. He attributes the slight increases for mid-level and senior managers to demand for specialized, skilled employees.
