Welcome to Buddy McGehee!
GEA's New Executive Director Starts this Week
Georgia Employers’ Association is pleased to announce that Othniel “Buddy” McGehee has joined the organization as the new Executive Director. Buddy is a career HR professional with broad international experience in the manufacturing, service, and government contracting sectors. Most recently, he served as Manager, U.S. Human Resources for Ricoh Americas Corporation. Previous positions include Senior HR Manager for ARINC, Inc. and management positions with YKK (USA), Inc.
Buddy is a Mercer University graduate. He was a founding member and past chairperson of the Middle Georgia Employer Committee and continues to serve on the Board of Directors. He is also a former Governance Board Member for the Bibb County School System’s Hutchings College and Career Academy.
“I’m very excited at the opportunities to serve GEA members and to continue the growth of the organization,” states McGehee. “I’m looking forward to getting in touch with the membership and with the larger Georgia business community to identify new areas of service that build on the value GEA provides for employers.”
McGehee will work closely with outgoing Executive Director Mike McCurdy, who will continue in an advisory role with the association. We hope you’ll join us to give Buddy a warm welcome to the GEA community! |

| There's Still Time to Register for PHR/SPHR Training
As an HR professional, obtaining a PHR certification is an important career goal. If you’re planning for the PHR or SPHR exams, you’ll want to attend GEA’s Certification Training Series, starting July 31 in Macon. The six session course will focus directly on the topics in the certification exams. You’ll be well-prepared to take the tests at the end of the course.

| | | | What Employers Need to Know about the Hands-Free Law
Don’t touch that phone! By now, you’ve certainly heard about Georgia’s New Hands-Free law that is designed to put an end to the state’s “distracted driving” problems. The new law proscribes lots of activities involving cell phones or other “standalone electronic devices,” all of which have caused accidents and injuries on Georgia roads.
Drivers are prohibited from:
- Holding or supporting cell phones or devices
- Writing, sending, or reading text-based communication
- Watching videos or movies
- Recording or broadcasting a video
In a new article in the GEA blog, attorney Patricia-Anne Upson takes a look at the history of the hands-free regulations and what is specifically allowed and prohibited under the new law. She also provides tips for employers including training and upgrades to company vehicles when employees are required to communicate while driving.

| | | | GEA's Popular Leadership Training Series Returns for Fall
Georgia Employers' Association and Humphries Consulting, Inc. are pleased to present a repeat performance of the popular (and effective) Leadership Traing Series. Designed for Supervisors, Lead People, and Team Leaders, the 5 day multi-module course focuses on practical leadership skills and tools.
The series begins on August 15 and will continue monthly through December. Participants are encouraged to attend all five sessions, but experienced leaders may wish to select individual workshops needed to sharpen their skills.
