Subject: Seeds and seedling… and Spring in February?!

Hello, Gardener!

How are your seedlings coming along? Have you started them for spring? We’d love to hear from you and/or see photos of your garden projects for this coming Spring! :)

We’ve been remiss in staying in touch regularly with you, because we got busy with another of our family endeavors. If you’re in the business of creating anything, you may find this interesting.

However, we haven’t stopped publishing articles to the Gardens All website and Facebook Page. And with an early “spring in February”, we’ve already been out in the garden tidying things up and coddling seedlings inside.

Coleman Alderson, our Chief Gardener, has also been busy finishing his second novel, which you can check out here… Ya know, things gardeners do when it’s too cold and snowy for digging in the dirt. ;-)

In the Garden:

The weather around here has been predictably unseasonable with temps in the 60’s and 70’s. We’ve seeded plots of snow peas and sugar snaps, begun clean-up, and have removed most of the frost covers. Temporarily removed. There’s still a punch coming from the Old Man this March and, who knows? Maybe in April as well.

Our indoor greenhouse shelf unit now has four levels under lights. Two contain overhead T5 light fixtures with heating pads on the shelf. These are dedicated for starting and growing to the primary leaf stage. They’ll then be transferred to the other shelves that have LED fixtures and cooler bulbs.

To water, a plastic watering can was modified with a large straw so that the flow can be more precisely directed. What are you using?

We really like this self-contained four-shelf “incubator” greenhouse. It’s a vast improvement on the jury-rigged units we’ve made in the past.

So far, we’ve planted squash (to get an early start), both Styrian and Carolina Candy Roaster, fish peppers, Marconi peppers, spinach, and Black Beauty tomatoes. On the latter, we plan to be potting the tomatoes up and have them set out under protective cover so we get an earlier harvest. Just experimenting!

Our collards, kale, arugula, and carrots from last year’s fall planting are still going strong. We kept them covered during the bitter cold snaps, and they’ve come through nicely.
We are so looking forward to getting back into the swing of planting, seeding, and growing. But we also need to heed the warning to “Beware the ides of March!” and keep those covers handy.

Please, share with us your early season exploits. Are you trying anything different this year? Comments are welcome on our Facebook page, and we reply to every email, so let us know what you’re working on and if you have any questions, struggles or wins.
