Subject: Okra... Beets... Fall Harvesting... and HAPPY OCTOBER! ☀

Happy Sunday!

Hope you've had a great couple weeks in the garden!

HARVESTING
We've been plucking the last of the dwindling supply of tomatoes, while welcoming the fall harvest:

  • Okra (green and Jing red okra)
  • Beets
  • Purple pole beans (carminat)
  • Longevity spinach
  • Cucamelons
  • Kale
  • Chard

Feel free to send in photos of your fall garden and harvests either on the Facebook Page or replying to this email.

YUMMY!
Last night we made an epic beet & potato curry, the recipe is in the article section below. We used beets from the garden of course, and also made a small okra curry.

We're still waiting for the winter squash to fully cure, though we've already had some great spaghetti squash dishes. We look forward to more of the winter butternuts, acorn and cushaw squash!

WON’T GROW AGAIN:
The kakai squash with the green pumpkin seeds were a bit disappointing. We were eager to grow the kakai because it was touted as a great survival food with the lots of edible pulp plus the high nutrient hulless pumpkin seeds.

The problem with the kakai is it takes a lot of processing to extract the pumpkin seeds from the stringy pulp, yet there’s only about a handful of seeds in each squash. After all of that time and effort, the meat, while edible is basically tasteless.

So we won’t be growing Kakai again.

CUTE CUCAS!

Here's a photo of our cucamelons. We’re sold on cucamelons! They produce a prolific amount of fruit are very sturdy (so great for kids snacks and travel) and lovely in salads and have a refreshingly pleasing zingy citrus cucumber flavor. They’re also super cute.
