Summer Solstice Greetings, Gardener!
How goes it in your garden?
CALENDULA This year, we planted a number of Resina Calendula (Calendula officinalis ‘Resina’), the recommended type for making calendula salve. You might already use calendula for burns, scrapes, and other skin afflictions. This article written by a GardensAll community member goes into detail about how to make and use calendula salve.
GARLIC Garlic harvest time has come and gone for us. Our Morrocan Creole hard necks matured last weekend. We took up some 40 bulbs and they are now curing under the shady eave of our tool shed. Check out our in-depth article about varieties and how to grow and harvest garlic. SWEET POTATOES A 15” deep raised bed has been built adjacent to our littlest shade house. It’s getting about 7 hours of direct sun and will be planted with Beauregard Sweet potatoes. Last season we tried growing sweet potatoes in organic potting soil bags.
The results were moderate production. Each bag averaged about 7 pounds of tubers.
So this year, we’re going deep! Using organic raised bed media, we will once again attempt to strike the motherlode of sweet potatoes come fall.
YOUR GARDEN Meanwhile, if you’ve had great success with sweet potatoes, please comment or reply with your tips and pics if you have them handy. We love to learn and share it so that we may all grow better!
