Subject: Garden disPATCH: Dwarf Okra in Pots

Hey Gardener!

If you are a fan of home grown okra, you might enjoy this week’s article. Some gardeners shy away from okra due to space considerations. A typical size okra plant can occupy 4.5 sq ft. That’s about 32 sq feet for just 7 plants.

We share our take on growing dwarf and compact varieties (some hybrid some heirloom). There are some great choices out there that can conserve space, and do well in containers. This means you can grow okra in just about any sunny location.

TOMATOES and ZUCCHINIS ARE DONE
We’ve pulled up our tomato plants in the upper garden. They had several good weeks of high production but quickly succumbed to a series of blight. The collection of debris was promptly burned.

Zucchini plants were also pitched into the burn barrel, along with numerous squash bugs attached.

FALL CROP is SEEDED
A fall crop of beets, chard, radish, and winter squash were seeded in the open boxes. We also put in a late seeding of pole beans that will hopefully produce before the killing frost.

Right now, pole beans and eggplant are the only crops being harvested at the upper garden.

Amazingly, our backyard home garden still has some great tomatoes, beans galore, okra, peppers, and perpetual spinach (which is living up to its moniker).

ATOMIC TOMATOES:
One cool new tomato discovery is the “Brad’s Atomic Grape”. It’s made the “Cover Plant” position on Baker’s Creek catalogue. The plants in our lower home patch look really good and we got to sample some ripe ones. Quite tasty they are!

The variety is definitely bigger than a grape. Perhaps, that’s why they’re dubbed “Atomic”.

Hey, let us know what’s going on in your “yarden”. Pictures, comments, memes are welcome via the GardensAll or Planting for Retirement Facebook or reply to this… we read every one.
