Happy Thanksgiving Weekend Greetings!
We hope you’ve had a wonderful Thanksgiving week/weekend, enjoying good food and cheer with family and friends.
We finally got to try our Red Kuri Squash in a recipe. We used it to make one of our favorite winter soup recipes called “Gypsy Soup”. The squash had so much flavor, quite similar to a butternut squash. Delicious!
We Beat the Pickle Worm and Saved the Squash! You may have read our article on the about Red Kuri squash shared in previous emails..?
If so, you may remember how we discovered pickle worms boring into the red kuri squash. Talk about discouraging! We thought we’d lose them in the same way we’ve lost our other squash to vine borers. If these pests take hold, they can completely devastate cucumbers, melons, squash, and other cucurbits. According to our on-line research it appeared that not much could fend them off.
Rather than give up, we developed a treatment regimen for pickle worms that has worked! YAY!!
Using this method, we salvaged about 85% of our crop! Whew! You can read more about that “magic cure” near the end of this article on growing red kuri squash. Heating a Small GreenhouseThe most economical way to keep a greenhouse warm overnight is to capture solar heat in mass. The denser and darker the mass, the more heat it can absorb. Stone, tile, brick, water in jugs, and drums are all possibilities for storing heat. We view all of this as learning through trial and error for when we have space for a larger greenhouse. We’re here to share and learn. We welcome your comments, ideas, and photos. As the Thanksgiving weekend passes, we send all of you our warmest thanks for joining our conversations and presentations over the past year.
