We’d mentioned how seed companies had begun notifications about seed shortages, slow shipping and even needing to close shop for a time. Then, Paulina Circelli, one of our
Planting for Retirement group members posted an informative guide to many of
the major seed companies and their current status with stock, shipping, and operations. Excellent!
WEATHER
Weather wise, it’s back to normal spring temps-no more the high 70’s or 80’s and much cooler at night. Our Zone 7A is a “Goldilocks” region right now. A bit early to set out the tomatoes-but we actually did some Cherokee Purples and covered them with a homemade fabric tunnel like those shown in our write-up
on frost protection.
FREEZE/FROST DATA
Mentioning frost, you may recall that the Hardiness Zones indicate nothing specific about your area’s first and last frosts or freezes, right? Check out
the Freeze/Frost data in the same article mentioned above. It’s according to state and then by county.
GROWING AND PROTECTING BLUEBERRIES
As our blueberry bushes up at the farm are just a few weeks from maturity, we have to consider what to do about the birds. An executive decision was made to dispense with all the tenting with bird netting and go with just reflective “bird-scare” tape instead. You can see what we’ve done in our
article on blueberries and
Bird Deflectors.
We’ll keep you posted with updates on how this is working. Meanwhile, if you have solutions that are working well for you, we’d love to hear it… just send us a reply.
We’re always so grateful and happy to be out in our garden, right in there with all the life forces merrily working away-hopefully with our assistance. And of course, it’s hard to resist an occasional garden selfie.
