Subject: GARDEN disPATCH: Labor Day & Corn Full Moon

Happy Labor Day and Corn Full Moon Bounty!

We just turned September this week with a beautiful “Corn” full moon to start it off. Our bounty continues to roll in, and we’re constantly grateful that our little garden can put forth so much.

One of our feature articles further below is about geodesic dome greenhouses thanks to the wonderful sharing of information and photos by community members. Many folks may be looking to invest in a greenhouse to extend your growing season if you don't already have one.

First... here' a few odds and ends and shares from our garden patch. Hopefully there'll be something in here that you enjoy or find useful. (Feel free to let us know).

Early September - (partial day's) Harvest (Zone 7A, North Carolina)
Growing Lots Without Lots of Land
We’ve learned that it doesn’t take acres of land to reap a sizable food supply. There’s even a possibility that you can expand your backyard gardening efforts into market gardening, especially if you have more sun than we do.

SHADE GARDEN
Or, if you have shade but still want to explore growing for yourself and/or for profit, you could consider shade crops and microgreens.

VERTICAL GARDENING
One harvest maximizing strategy used here here in our 30 X 50, mostly shady garden patch is to grow vertically. Except for the leafy greens and bush beans, practically everything we’re growing has been strung up, trellised or teepee’d. 😎

CATTLE PANEL ARCH - GREAT FOR BEANS
This year we grew purple podded pole beans over a cattle panel arch. It’s so easy and pleasant to go beneath the arch and harvest beans beneath the dappled shade. Why didn’t we do this before? It will be our preferred mode to grow beans in the future.

REMOVING THE DDD’S
This week, we’ve also removed the DDD’s. That is dead, diseased, and dying plants. This includes plants that have infestations of pests. The debris from tomatoes, cucumbers, and older beans goes into our burn barrel. We never put such material in our compost.

We’ve covered sanitation and other tips in this article on Fall Garden Maintenance
