Salsa Sunday, Gardener!
The ides of summer are approaching… mid summer.
Good news because they beckon a long-awaited tomato harvest. Already we’ve brought in some amazingly flavorful heirloom tomatoes like Cherokee Purple, Royal Hillbilly, and Dad’s Sunset.
As noted before, with heirloom tomatoes you get the wonderful taste and variety. And yet… pause for emphasis . . and yet, you lose the resistance (VFNT) bred into the hybrids. ABOUT VFNT So, we heirloomers deal with the Verticillium, Fusarium, Nematodes, and Tobacco mosaic as best we can. Cat-facing in some of our favorite “sandwich” tomatoes is also a major issue.
Over the years, we’ve learned lessons about how to deal with cat-facing, bugs, and splitting. The video at the end of our article on tomato diseases offers suggestions based on our experience.
The video also glimpses the joys of morning coffee ;-) and how to use “tomato clips” on all sorts of tall growers, including okra.
How’s your garden coming along? Any tips or comments about growing the heirloom tomatoes would be especially welcome.
Our shared experiences make us better growers and, as you know we’re all about growing great gardens.
